CO2 Adaptor Question

How much pressure is it rated for?

I was asking MAC1 about an adaptor for his reg and tank setup and pointed me at the AF CO2 adaptor. If my memory serves me correct, CO2 is around 1000 PSI and apparently the adaptor can deal with 1800 PSI, but just how high can you safely go with it?

Which leads into my next question. With a regulator failure, am I correct in my assumption that the usual result is a rise in output pressure? The thought of the adaptor turning into schrapnel next to my face is not very appealing.

If the disc fails it would leak out the air. Not a big deal since that is what it is designed to do. You would then have to replace the burst disc. Even ones rated for HPA occasionally burst from regular use.

Do you know if Mac1 is replacing the burst discs (and return spring) with one rated for HPA? They are wicked EASY to replace. 😉

I have the CO2 adapter on one of jdsairman’s 62 cu in bottles with a 2100 psi regulator. But I bought a standard Condor valve from Airforce to replace the CO2 valve on the adapter. AF did answer Comet, it is just not what you wanted to hear. They did not test it for use with HPA. It is rated up to 1800 PSI. CO2 is normally a lot lower pressure than that.

From what I am reading in this little thread, it is not uncommon for the burst disk to go on these things when used for HPA. Pehaps investment in an adaptor rated for HPA might not be an unwise investment.

I always recommend CO2 fittings only be used on CO2.

High pressure air is nothing to take lightly.

Use only rated fittings for HPA.

Nice way for them to not answer your question. Since we have a member using a 2100 PSI regulated bottle on his adapter, we would have to assume, and yes I know what that means, that the burst disk is higher than a 1.8K. I am well aware of this, as I have blown a couple of 1.8K disks when adjusting a regulator on a paintball HPA tank. When I exceeded the 1800 PSI mark while filling, the disk did it’s job and blew. I adjusted the reg down a bit, and the new one held, output was right around 1650 PSI.

The spring/hammer/valve setup on my SS overcomes valve lock at around 1800 PSI. That is why I want to regulate it at that pressure. I will get geegobs of shots with a 3000 PSI fill. 1600 PSI would work fine also.

I use 48ci HPA tank with 2100 psi reg and co2 adapter. It’s just working fine. I got about 100 shots at 900psi with 18.13jsb, tack driver of my talon ss with 24″ barrel.
I tested it up to 3300 psi, no problem when I tried my 4500 psi CF tank with 3300 psi reg.
Very solid piece.

I currently use a 1600 PSI bottle on my CO2 adapter, and have had no issues with that. However, previously when adjusting a regulator in a paintball bottle, I forgot to swap out the 1.8K disk to a 5K disk when moving the output up to around 1800-1900 PSI. This blew the disk, and I was informed the disks can vary 100-200 PSI, scared the crap out of me when it went. I settled on a little lower pressure, just because I had some 1.8K disk spares, and all worked out fine. I would guess you should be able to run 160-1700 PSI, and the disk should hold, if you get too close it will blow, but that will also let you know where the “safety switch” of the disk is. I noticed on my 1600 PSI tank, it has 5K disks in it, if you check most 3K tanks, you will generally find a 5K burst disk, I assume this is because a 3K disk would burst at fill pressure. If it helps any, my Talon SS with a 12″ barrel shot an average of 723 FPS in 22 cal, with a SD of only 1.88 FPS. That was with 14.3 gr CPHP’s and across 10 shots. The second best part was I could get 60 or 70 shots out of a 13 cu in tank before I hit the regulator. Hope this helps you decide which way to go,I personally think the adapter can go higher than 1800 PSI, as it’s a solid thick piece, but since I have not tried to push one beyond that, someone else may chime in.

That is a good thing. That is the pressure I would be running at also.

The CO2 adapter also has a burst disk in it, I don’t know what the rating is, but for CO2 bottles the disk is normally a 1.8K. If this is also the case for the adapter, then we would assume any bottle with a regulator set above that would blow the disk. Therefore if all of the above is true, if a regulator set below that fails, then as the pressure rises above the CO2 adapter’s burst disk rating, then it should blow, protecting the adapter, and the user.
