Q:

New Cricket Compact with Oak Bulldog stock

Greeting fellow Talon members. I’m new to joining Talon but have been a lurker for sometime. Been into BB guns and air rifles for 40+ years. The Kalibrgun Cricket is my first PCP. I really made up my mind to buy it after reading all the feedback postings in this forum, so many thanks to all members who have posted information and photos. It really does help people new to the sport make informed purchases.

I bought my .22 cal, Compact Bulldog oak stocked version from Top Gun in Arizona. Great service and fast shipping. The only thing is mine has the old style pressure gauge with the color index. Hope to replace that gauge with one of the black numbered versions. Overall quality is excellent. The fit and finish is superb and the gun’s function has been flawless.

I have not had a chance to really test the accuracy yet. I have played around with it using an old Nikon 3-9 X 40, shooting at some improvised targets in the back yard. Just playing around though I can tell that this short little BullPup is a tack-driver.

Below are a few photos of my Compact Cricket. You can see the shortness of the gun, with a total length barely 25 inches. Bullpup rifles are known for their portability & quick handling. This will make a fine field hunting and varmint rifle.

The adjustment at the rear of the Cricket is for hammerspring only. Nothing to do with the regulator……..

That said, – turning the hsp all the way in does not give you a lot in terms of added fps…..

From the various fps reported, it may seem as if the Cricket has been supplied with several different hsps……..

Cheers from Trygve in sunny Lanzarote ! 😀

I remember that post, but it seemed the owner was not able to get a substantial increase in fps.

But I also have a lousy memory.

I’d sure like to see that shorty up in the mid to upper 800 fps range with 18gr pellets! I’d consider selling my daystate to get one.

Hoot

Hoot 😯 I am not positive but I think I remember reading a post on adjusting the reg on the Cricket, If I recall I believe it can be done at the rear of the gun. There are two small holes at the rear of the gun and I think it is just a matter of turning it, I am not possitive on this but will do a bit of searching to see if I can find something on it.

Barrel length has been show not to be a factor in accuracy. A 12″ barrel at 100 yards is as accurate as an 18″ barrel. Granted, the fps/fpe will be lower, unless you put more air pressure behind it, then it will be as powerful as the 18″, but you will suck a LOT of air doing it.

I had a .25 Marauder and quieted it down a bit more by providing vent holes at the bottom rear of the shroud. Four to six, and a bit of felt over or under them if they exhaust too loudly. Mine were about 1/8th inch diameter. Ed’s shrouds has a circle of vent holes at the rear of his shroud. Much smaller, but they extend around the entire diameter of the shroud. It relieves pressure at the muzzle end of the shroud, resulting in a slight lowering of sound.

Can you get the .25 caliber in the Shorty? That might be interesting. I had a shorty Matador and it did everything the standard did, but it was a tad louder.

Has anyone adjusted the fps on the Cricket yet? Curious as to how that is done, and if it is as easy as the Edgun to adjust.

All bull pups sound louder than they are pacifically due to the positioning of the ear over the breach. To compare bull pups to conventional pcp air rifles, in regards to noise level, I like to extend the bull pups as to emulate the position of the conventional pcp air rifle and one will notice a great difference and a more realistic sound that is actually heard by others. I have also taken conventional air rifle and placed my ear on the breach when shot to get a comparison to the bull pup (Edgun). Try it you’ll be surprised.

That sounds great. I don’t think accuracy will be an issue at all – even beyond 75 yards with a good rest. I shot squirrels beyond that with a .25 12″ std AF LW barrel on my Stubby (my farthest is 87 yards) gun traveling even slower FPS.

The CZ hammer forged barrels KalibrGun is using are about as good as any I have seen in a PCP and it seems very comparable to my Daystate Air Ranger LW polished barrel with the testing so far in long range accuracy. The shorter barrel won’t make it less accurate – just a bit slower but since it is only 2.5″ or so shorter than the compact maybe around 40 FPS slower. The Compact is a neat gun

Hello and thanks for the greetings and info. Feel like I know most of you from reading your posts the last 6 months.

DOH! Yes I meant Walnut stock.

Reading online, things like air capacity, shot-count, shot speed are all slightly down from the standard. Noise is slightly more. None of these things swayed me from getting the compact.

Barrel is 15 inches which is still sufficiently long. I read the average speed is 850-860 FPS with 18.1 grain JSB pellets. Around 50+ useful shots. I shot mine around 40 times before refilling. I use 15.9 JSB so I would assume my speeds are more along the lines of 870-880 FPS. My filler gauge read 110 when I started to pump and I filled to 260. 260 is about the middle of the yellow on the Crickets gauge.

The accuracy of the standard 17.75″ barrel is outstanding. 80-90 yard shots are fully possible if the shooter does his/her part. I expect the shorter barrel 15″ to have slightly less potential for accuracy. However I am expecting to use this gun at shorter ranges, 50-60 yards. In my backyard shooting at 65 ft I can hit a dime size target every time. I know this isn’t a controlled accuracy test but it is an indicator of the gun’s potential accuracy.

Sound level is a subjective thing. I have limited experience with PCP rifles and no sound meter with which to obtain readings. It sounds loud when your the one shooting. There is a sharp report followed by the whack of the pellet hitting the target with some authority. That said, I have read that the Crickets are fairly quiet when compared to many other popular PCP air guns. I also noticed something standing next to Inga when she is shooting, the gun sounds much quieter. In fact the impact of the pellet is louder than the discharge of air. I step back 20 feet and the report was diminished even more? In fact it wasn’t bad at all. When shooting this short BullPup your face is little more than a foot away from the end of the barrel. Perhaps that is why it sounds so loud when you are the one shooting? My neighbors didn’t seem to hear it or complain so that’s good.

Here is someones testing from YF. The Cricket Compact noise is supposed to be about the same as a .25 Marauder. I think that is pretty good. He also listed some performance numbers 14.66 @ 865 for 24 FPE. My std .22 Cricket is 33 FPE and he has the .25 Cricket at 47 FPE. Not sure about the .177 guns though.

Heres a relatively quick test on my Crickets just to get a feel for what they sound like. Something to think about

quote SECoda:

Probably walnut. Oak is porous, with an open grain. Oak is also very brittle and tends to crack and split easily.

I look forward to FPS and shot count.

Be sure to let us know if it’s quiet. I need quiet and this little rascal has caught my attention.

Congrats on the Cricket Compact  , stock up on 15.9s and air. I think your stock is walnut. :thumb:

That’s about the size of the Lelya. I’m extremely curious about the shot count and power…fps/fpe the regulator is set for.

If you get a chance, please let us short gun lovers find out more about this little jewel.

I have the colored gauge too and thought about replacing mine but I may just leave it in there. Compact looks good and short.
