Ranger 45 groups
I just got in from shooting the Ranger. JDNC had me wondering about accuracy.
I shot tethered and chronied about 10 shots at different PSI levels and settled in at 3600 PSI.
I was shooting 408 grains or so off the top of a grape bin with a Caldwell range bag and rolled up leather jacket, I held the forearm in my hands resting on the range bag.
I was only shooting in the 755 760 FPS range, the last 9 shot fired were for three, 3 shot groups were, in this order 1.5, 1.75, 1. for an average of 1.41 at one hundred yards.
Now I had just cast those this morning, not weighted them just sorted for when they stopped being wrinkled and kept every one after that. My sizer sizes .0005 over groove diameter, using my cheap HF calipers, which are for comparison mostly as they don’t read all that consistent.

I would like an update as to your findings and your spring size. I don’t like the idea of the spring being compressed like this during storage and sure am not going to it out during storage. I think your on the right track.

When I first got my Quigley, it shot hardest at 4200, now 3700. I measured the spring compression and it is at the limit of compression just sitting uncocked. An 8″ spring gets compressed to under 4″. I have some heavier springs to experiment with by maybe using 7″ or so to cut down the squeeze. I might have to have the hammer bored out slightly, as the heavy spring is just a skosh larger in diameter, about .015 or so. Regards, Tom

It seems to me that most Ranger owners are able to shoot over 4000 PSI. And when I get a new spring I can for a few days, then the spring seems to take a set and I am down under 4000PSI once again.
I would be curious to see what yours is doing.

Are others with the Ranger getting the same results in reference valve lock (approx at the same pressures)?
I’ll post my findings as soon as I get a chance to have a dry day to shoot.

I simply can’t open my vale at 4200, I get like 555 FPS. At 3800 I am in the 780-790 or so range.
Also to date, I have not gotten a 300 grain bullets to shoot well.

Were you getting more consistent velocities at 3600? I hope to get groups like that. What’s amazing to me is that you’re doing it with three shots!
I did get a chance to let my brother let two go down range today at approximately 4400 psi and as I was standing to the side I thought it sounded louder the second shot(valve lock on the first ?). Can’t wait to get the chrony out to check out a full range of pressures in reference to possible valve lock but raining again. I would like to know where the cut off is on the high end. I also need to finish inleting and bedding before I waste a lot of time.
