Q:

Any info on the "ping"?

So Ive created my own LDC and hammer slap mods to help quiet this great rifle, but does anyone have any info on what exactly causes the “ping” of the tank? Is it just the steel tank itself or is it the valve inside maybe? Id really like to find a way to minimize it. Have any of you found a good remedy for it?
Thanks

ping comes from inside the tank look at the way they stop it on a mrod on youtube then you will understand.

The ping is the sound of the tanks internal resonance after being struck by an external force of energy that was temporarily stored in the hammer spring which upon being released by the trigger seer slams the hammer against the breech that is engaged with the tophat valve stem and weather or not the tophat contacts the brass valve stem guide or the delrin valve seal transmits this slamming energy into the forend of the tank, the compressed air inside the tank resonates for a short time causing the ping sound to radiate from the body of the tank.

Anything put inside the tank to dampen the ping reduces the volume and must adversely effect the shot count. Mrod solution is probably a win/lose trade-off.

It just plain makes sence to dampen the striker with an oring if the mechanism is adequately adjustable to compensate for any change. The AF mechanism has been proven to be easily adjustable to make this compensation with a ping dampening oring added behind the tophat. “0” trade-off. It just takes a little experimenting and slight adjustment of the AF air rifle to regain a slight loss of FPS. And ADDITIONALLY the AF mechanism becomes more efficient producing MORE GOOD SHOTS PER FILL ❗

A CLEAR WIN FOR AF…THANKS TO THIS FORUM ❗

I have no idea how it would work on a talon .

However, considering a Talon has a different valve stem return spring, it would be interesting if someone would report on it.

My guess is you may not be able to keep the Talon below Mach 1 unless you use the smaller of the two restrictors that come with the TalonTunes One Piece VALVE Stem. I believe it is possible and would be beneficial to reducing air useag and eliminating the nasty little top hat grub screws that someetimes create prooblems. If I had the Takon, I’d give it a try and write up the before and after velocities and what ever.
That’s how we earn our merit badges on this forum πŸ™„

Good luck and let us know if it works for you.

Yes, I put a full Condor valve in my Talon SS. The one piece top hat is not only stronger, and consistent, you don’t have the problems with the tiny set screws in the stock top hat coming loose and changing your tune every other day. πŸ‘Ώ

And if they do work on the talon ss can someone explain to the noobs how the one piece is a better option.
Thanks again.

Yep! Adjust that adjustable TopHat, or order a TalonTunes TH! πŸ˜‰

TalonTunes TH on a Talon SS? I have read these are more so intended for the Condor tank. Am I wrong?

Thx!

Usually about 1/4 turn adjustment of the top hat will return any lost power.

Better yet get TalonTunes One Piece VALVE Stem and be amazed at how much more you can do ❗

HA I knew I came to the right place for answers. Thanks for the warm welcome πŸ™‚
Hey Lurker I had tried the o-ring behind the top hot but apparently I cant find a slim enough ring that doesn’t restrict the valve. It definitely cut the ping only because it cut my power in half. πŸ˜• I will have to do some more shopping and give it another try.

Hang tough fellows…remember the rule to not tell a noob about our highly secret technology of putting an o-ring behind the top hat until he has been a member for a full 26 days.

Oh HI swift518 :tag:

Take the shroud back off you’ll never notice it.
