Q:

Anyone having Barracuda problems in the R3. 25 chamber?

I just bought an industrial drum of. 25 Barracudas. They seem almost too snug when I close the bolt on my Edgun Long.

I have to push pretty hard the last few centimeters to seat them and close the bolt. Perhaps a mil or two too large? Shoots fine, great accuracy.

Thoughts. Suggestions. Wise ass remarks?

This is why I value this forum so much. Quick and thorough answers from the wise ones. Thanks Hoot 😆 Most of my shootings will be done within 50yds so those heavy suckers will be just fine hahahahaha. I meant to order Baracuda Hollow points but clicked on Baracuda Hunter Extremes by accident. Looks as though someone poked a phillips screwdriver into the lead while it was hot.

Oh well, I’ll play with it anyways.

Don’t be too disappointed just yet! Fire one of those “Phillips” into a ballistic gel and you will notice a fragmented aspect that is equally as nasty as a hollowpoint.

What’s the heaviest .25 pellet you would put in a Matador without worrying about shortening it’s life? I know it was made with JSB 25.4 gr in mind. I recently took HOOT”s advice and got a tin of H&N Baracudas 28.4 gr and 3 tins of JSB Exact Kings. While ordering, the Eun Jin looked pretty good but it weighs 43.2 gr. I wasn’t sure if that will do any harm to the gun. Off topic, I also received my Hill MK3 pump from pyramid air today and that thing is freaken heavy! I was expecting a bicycle pump like weight, but this thing is very durable. Guess its a must for the high pressure.

Hey Donnie!

It’s not the weight of the pellet that might cause problems, it’s how high you set your hammer spring tension, and/or adjust your regulator, to increase your power.

The heavier the pellet, the greater the potential FPE (Foot Pounds of Energy), but to achieve the highest fpe, you need to increase the FPS (Feet Per Second) that the gun fires those heavier pellets. What generally happens is the increased load on the regulator and air delivery parts is increased wear. However, we are talking thousands of shots for this to take place with the high end air guns.

For a .25, I generally shoot at 880-900 fps, and both Cricket and Edgun can easily be adjusted to that speed. That gives about 51+ fpe using a 30gr pellet like the Barracuda, and the 25gr JSB. Unless you are shooting extremely large game, that should be plenty of punch for most shooters. I would not hesitate to take a head shot on an average sized hog at that fpe, if he was within reasonable range (100-150 feet) and I had an escape route handy. Of course, I personally wouldn’t turn and run…I’d grab my Boker switchblade, and it would be “Mano-a-Hoggo” to the death…but that’s just the way I roll. I wouldn’t expect an ordinary human to do the same!

I’ve even read, not that I would ever attempt such a thing, a full sized white tail deer being dropped like a bad habit, with a .25 caliber 30 meter head shot…or so I’ve heard.

So buy some big pellets, just don’t try to get them up to the same speed as the 25-30gr pellets you normally use. You will still get an increase in fpe, but the range will be limited, and accuracy might need to be compensated for with scope adjustments. (think of a trajectory like a rainbow)

Hope this helps a bit. Never hurts to experiment.

Yes…I have/had a .25 Cricket, and yes…I have/had a .25 Edgun Long. The Cricket is quieter, and can be made as close to silent as one can get with that much air release. The Edgun has a less sound efficient shroud. But I don’t think Ed is overly concerned with his gun being dead silent, or it would be dead silent. I drilled out the vent holes in the rear to roughly double OEM size, and drilled the barrel bushing vent holes to permit more air to release into the rear of the shroud. It helped a lot. It’s still not as dead silent as the Cricket…but then I’m not done just yet. More on this later…

Sincere regards,

So Hoot – have you got a .25 Cricket and a .25 Matador? 😯

“Skenko” sounds like an off brand body rub made from skunk oil!

I looked into them anyway and found their bucket mouthed hollow point pellets: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Skenco-25-Cal-Ultra-Shock-Hollow-Point-Pellets-23-5-grains-hunting-pellet-/290829385930 They look like they have no front end…you could load them either way.

Then there’s their armor piercing metal tipped pellets, the Ultra-Mag Metal Tipped: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Skenco_UltraMag_Metal_Tip_25_Cal_28_60_Grains_Pointed_50ct/856

Then there’s the Skenko Ultra High Velocity/Hyper-Velocity Field Pellet, that looks to be a “flechette” embedded in a plastic casing, similar to the 105mm round currently used in the M1A1 Abrams tank for kinetic energy kills on hard targets…: http://www.pelletperfect.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=265

I think I’ll stick to the more conventional Barracudas. A lot cheaper, and not quite so exotic for my humble tastes. But thanks for the education on how you lads get long range kills with sub 12 fpe airguns! I’m surprised they don’t offer an explosive tipped pellet…perhaps next year.

Suggestion…Use jsb 25.4grs as that is what it was designed for but if you really must go heavier try the “Skenco big boys” from the same company that brought us predator polymags.. think of them as a JSB heavy .25 diabolo weighing 31grs. 😉 . I wouldnt be surprised to see JSB start making these pellets under license like the polys and call them thier own .25 jumbo heavy pellet.
Remark… they fit and shoot better than the barracudas in all my .25 cals Ive owned and tested and they have a better dome head with a higher BC..

Hi there,

A bit off topic, – but did anybody tell you that the color of your writing makes it veeery difficult to read in broad daylight on certain screens ??? 😉

(Not so wiseass remark for whatever it may be worth from Oslo….. 😀 )

Barras in cal.22 (5.52 mm – they come in 5.50, 5.51, 5.52 and 5.53) have been my favorite for many years. So have the cal.25 ones (31.02 grs) in the few .25 guns I have. Pellets beautifully finished and feels somewhat harder than the JSBs. I still have a few thousand of them from a lot I liked particularly much. Tins of 200 with the old red and blue lid. Some say the new production may not be as good, – but I have never tried……….

Seems at their best in my guns from 750 to some 850 fps. The only .25 gun I have which is able to deliver higher fps with these pellets is the DS AirRanger80, – and there’s a remarkable spread increase once you get above 950 fps in that gun. But then that’s true for most pellets flying faster than 950 I guess…….

Please report back about accuracy etc. when you get the chance….. 😉

Cheers
Trygve 😀

Barracudas also fit tight in my .25 R3. Much more than kings. They shoot well and hit with balls.
