Now I’ve paintballed most of my life and I always knew not to put any kind of oil into my tank for lubrication…but now that I’m into my airguns more…some of my fears carry over to this hobby….I know that some Grease has oil in it and can cause a combustion when mixed with high pressure….so my question is when applying grease to the orings that hold back the high pressure in the tube of our guns…can that grease be exposed to those high pressures and cause an explosion….

DOW 55 or divers grease seems to be the gold standard on o-rings for experienced PCP tuners out on the web like Ernest.

All I see in danger is it has a low flash point of 300*f
So PCP/CF air tank/scuba tank/HP hand pump do not work or near the temp if it did your tank will explode due to over pressurization of the heat. like leaving your scuba tank in the truck of your car on a hot day—you will blow your tank disk.

An email from the makers of gun sav grease….I asked if the grease has petroleum in it.
Now luckily I haven’t used any…I wanted too because it’s great for orings on my paintball gun but obviously not when there’s high pressure involved.
“YES it does have petroleum!! Please be careful.. DO NOT USE!!! DO NOT USE it in any tank regulator or under any pressure. It WILL EXPLODE! Thank you and please be careful- WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USING IT!!”

The guy most likely found a tank at work and thought hey “free fillings”! and didn’t realize that it was oxygen and that oxygen oxidizes most things and loves hydrocarbons which can result in explosion like fires. As long as you use only compressed air or any inert gasses readily available like argon or nitrogen or even helium (which probably will leak out before it’s time to shoot) I’m convinced it won’t be a problem. Anyway you should always use lubricants sparingly and with sense at least when it comes to airguns 😉 and yes silicone grease is great for orings and only that.

silicon-based lubes like Moly 55, have been using it for years. I wouldn’t use it on springer, with its high temp and pressure when the piston slam home—-> going to be a lot of smoke out your barrel with a bang.
On PCP it not subject to high temp and extreme pressure surge, so it’s safe and will continue to use it with no fear in mind.

That is why we use silicon-based lubes.
It’s a good idea to stay away from petroleum based oils and greases all together. For O-rings/fill nipples you use silicon grease…….. 😉

For additional, i have found below pic long time ago in somewhere, i don’t remember exactly! sorry, the guy used petroleum based oils on his PCP air rifle, and this happened, the rifle looks like ( Sam yang or Eun jin)
