Edgun Veles .177cal
I know its not a bullpup but it is a EDgun and there is very little info in English available out there on these little pistols so this thread is set out to change that. Anything you want to know about this little exotic beauty just ask and Ill do my best to answer or photograph it. If there’s something I cant answer Im sure Ed will chime in 😀
For those interested here’s some pics of a basic strip down, this is as far as you would need to strip it for a service/lube or tune.
Like the Matador it can be stripped down very quickly with 2 Allen keys and like the Matador it is built Russian tough. The machine work on the internals is nothing short of stunning, all parts are very well polished and finished.
Although this little handgun is very light due to the alloys used in its production it has a real feel of quality and lacks any tinny rattles. It doesn’t give any impression of having to treat it “softly”. It operates and cocks with nice solid but smooth mechanical clunks and emanates close tolerance machining and high quality parts that are built to last.
Here’s the regulator opened up, it is a mini version of that in the Matador and although smaller in size it comes with the same trusted Edgun consistency and efficiency as its big sister..
Heres a shot of the base of the pistol grip where the Adjuster screw is located for the HST (Hammer Spring tensioner). Loosen the small locking grub screw and fine tune the velocity by turning the slotted spring tensioner in or out.. the hammer is in the cocked position in this pic which is why the centre spring guide is protruding from the adjuster screw, when it is un-cocked you can use a flat bladed screwdriver to adjust the velocity.
Heres the rear cocking slide containing the breech lock up mechanism and the pellet probe
and the trigger group complete with safety catch. This is a novel accessory for an Edgun ;D
There is also an additional safety feature built into the slide action, when it is in the full rearward and cock position you cant pull the trigger, the slide needs to be pushed forward about 5mm till it clicks before the trigger will work then it can be safely un-cocked by holding and letting the slide go slowly while holding the trigger down. this feature insures no crushed fingers if the trigger was bumped while loading a pellet into the feed tray..
Personally I would like to see an adjustable trigger on this little pistol as the current trigger has no first stage, just a long heavy-ish creepy pull with a surprise of a break.. I have been “setting” the trigger by applying the safety catch and pulling the trigger till the catch stops it then releasing the catch.. This sets a soft travelling first stage with a noticeable stop at the second stage and a much lighter and predictable break.
It would be nice to have a grub screw to set it to this same setting, I will look at doing that mod at some stage.
Something I am very fond of is the safety catch, It operates just the same as a Colt 1911, just push it up with the top side of your thumb and flick it down to fire with the pad of your thumb..
The valve assembly with plenum attached:
Heres the valve, plenum and regulator assembled without the air cylinder on, you can see that with the end plug/fill probe fitting sitting approximatly where it would fit that there is only about 2″ (50mm) of empty air cylinder space for the reservoir! Even with this tiny amount of air this .177cal short pistol gets 30+ shots on the regulator from 230bar down to 105bar on a 10ftlbs tune
If needed the regulator can be adjusted from the front of the cylinder just by removing the front cap without having to strip the pistol any further.
You can also see that lovely shiny choked Match Lothar Wather barrel that is custom made and a key part to Edgun’s amazing inherent accuracy traits.
The filling probe is the same as the Matadors probe and it inserts into the front of the pistol, there is no manometer (Pressure gauge)on the Veles so Ive found the best way to monitor the number of shots is to put 30 pellets in your pocket when you fill it and when they are gone its time to refill again.

After a bit of chrony work and other fine tuning I set out to do some 35m test groups with a few different pellets.
The rear open sights are adjustable from left to right on a locking grub screw but the front blade is very thick and by no means are they target sights.
They are fine for back yard plinking but if you want any real long range accuracy the Veles will benefit from some optics.
The best group I could get at this range with the open sights was just under 3 inches.. so I mounted some glass to her.. 😯 😀
This was the best way to test the pellets capabilities..
..and heres how they did…this thing is a real tack driver!
I shot 10 pellets in each group, the 10.34gr 4.52mm EDgun match pellets seem to just have the edge but there was a slight left to right wind which probably effected the 8.44grs a little more.
The pollymags has a smaller head size of 4.50mm and weigh 8.0gr.. they were a little more erratic but that was to be expected as they are a long pellet that requires higher velocities to be stable..
The point of impact was very similar between all pellets.
Ive got mine singing at 12ftlbs on the EDgun 10.34gr pellets at the moment, its a dream to shoot, the grip fits my hand like no other, Its like I took a piece of clay and squeezed it between my fingers.. a perfect moulded fit that points very well.
Shooting without the suppressor on it cracks like a .22lr but with the suppressor it’s extremely quite, almost completely silent in fact.
It has a cool amount of muzzle flip recoil when fired that is very manageable but gives this little gem a very real handgun feel.
I have mated my personal Veles up with a 4X burris long eye relief scope and they complement each other nicely I think.

I have yet to get out and hunt with this pistol other than a couple of mid range pigeons but I intend to try this one on some rabbits very soon.
I took this flying rat at 46m with the Burris 4x and got one other one with the open sights at 32 meters..

Any idea on the numbers for a Vales in .22? Shots per fill, accuracy, fpe? I think I have to own one of these.
