Q:

Unscientific test #2. Can you tell the difference in speed

just by looking at video?!

Ok guys, here is another UNSCIENTIFIC test of power.

OK, as a few of you might know, me and my buddy Eric Mayer (who post here) have been testing to a small degree the FX Boss .30 cal. Eric’s buddy bought this gun and put it right into Erics hands for him to test. Especially being that Eric has his own forum. Anyways, while sighting the Boss in at 50 yards, Eric decides to walk downrange to place a couple of rotting pomegranates on some tree branches at 50 yards and see how much damage the 30 cal could do. At the time of the video, Eric only had the JSB 50 gr pellets. The gun is shooting them at a tad over 850 fps for 80 FPE. After Eric hit the 1st “granite”, we were amazed by not only destruction but by the “DECEIVABLE” silence of the gun. The Boss…….IS NOT LOUD at all. But much more on that at a later time.

After Eric blows up the 1st “granate”, I mention to him that I would love to see what his 17 Winchester Super Magnum could do to one. I also then mention that I would love to see how my TD257 compared to his “RIMMY” in the splatter dept. He laughed and thought it would be interesting also. But we both knew which of the 3 guns was the power king. And we also knew which gun had the projectile that could do the most VISUAL destruction. But, that wasn’t the point. Its simply about having some fun with air guns and putting it on video.

Now, as I post this video and story, I urge everyone to understand that this is about fun and not truly making a comparison between 80 fpe, 160 fpe and 400 fpe. Eric and I know already. BUT, if you watch the explosions, the air guns don’t do too bad at “MISTING” the fruit.

1 THING TO NOTICE (the scientific part…lol): If you guys watch closely, each frame grab at the end of the video was taken ONLY 1 FRAME after the projectiles passed through the pomegranate. But I will also be honest, the FX frame grab actually cheated cause for some reason, my editing program only would grab the 2nd frame past the explosion of the fruit giving the projectile (pellet) more visual speed than it actually has. But even then, 2 frame grabs later for the FX compared to the immediate “1” frame grab for the other 2 guns show you just how fast at 50 yards each projectile is passing by. By the start of the 2nd frame (30 frames per second), the TD257 and the 17 WSM are long gone and the fruit is vaporized and or chunked. My HD camera was over 20 feet away from the fruit. ummmmmm hummmmm, notice how my TD257 throws a chunk of fruit and hits the tripod at over 20 feet away…..lol! Yeah, so what, I’m biased man.

Also, for comparison purposes, me shooting those same “granates” with my Rapid 25 50 FPE using JSB Kings was….well………UNEVENTFUL compared to the other 3 guns……lol! WOW, NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SAY THE 25 IS AN UNEVENTFUL PELLET on objects……LOL!

My .17 is super explosive! 😯 when I firs got it , I took it squirrel hunting. took a good looking tree rat at about 40 yards and hit it in the head.

The SQ. was lying down on a limb and the bullet took his head off. It was NOT a stright on shot. I only hit the head, with te body lying stretched out to the right of his head.

Imagine my supprise when I found the Sq. damed near blown the hell up. 😯 😯 😯
I cleaned it and found brass and lead from one end to the other. Killed any idea of a good dinner! 👿

quote Tofazfou:

the 400 FPE 17 rimmy bullet is super fragile and is design for just that, to transfer the most FPE

I know jack about .17 except that they carry serious velocity. The fracture thing explains the frame grab. I was trying to figure how so much energy got transferred. That pomegranate got shreaded into teeny-tiny bits. But if the bullet comes apart, that makes a lot more sense than a “bow wave” that can propagate through what is really an enclosed cluster of tiny fruit. If I hadn’t seen the video, I’d have expected the .17 to slip through with a lot less damage.

Awesome video, as usual. Thanks!

John

Thanks guys.

John,

Case in point, the 400 FPE 17 rimmy bullet is super fragile and is design for just that, to transfer the most FPE/SHOCK on target. The ole solid pellet and the HP bullets won’t distort very much on a granate.

I eagerly await your post sir…………..

FPE isn’t important. What’s important is energy transferred to the target. I’ve been experimenting with mods and I’ve managed to not only effectively eliminate penetration, but increase the velocity of the shockwave in (fluid) targets. (Solid targets like stone do weird things.) Blow shit up, indeed. I picked up a variety of fruits and veggies to blow up, hopefully in the next day or so, weather permitting, so hopefully I will elaborate in the next few days.

NIce video. Fun to watch stuff explode.

Great video. I’m sure you aren’t surprised any more than I am that some will watch that video and come up with all sorts of theories and explanations.

Anyway, scientific or not it is cool to watch stuff vaporize.
