Yea – it’s why I have a 32x on my PB prairie dog rifles where 250 is a very close shot. 😯

I am starting a .257 project on an old Condor frame and am just getting educated by the experts. I am looking at a 74 grain .25 slug at 1000 fps using a custom valve, hammer, breech, and barrel. We are talking five full power shots out of the standard AF 490cc tank. A longer barrel is an absolute requirement to achieve the desired velocity (28″ preferred but you can take somewhat of a hit on performance and reduce that somewhat) . A true 250+ yard killer and MOA level accuracy. That puts the numbers into a realistic perspective. 😯
Seems the term “Magnum” has not yet been adapted in our hobby. The idea of a .25 that could push a cast slug over 900 fps really lights my fire! The .257 guys have been there, done that. However, us common ignorant folk do our modifications with a pair of piers, a flathead screwdriver, a pin punch, and limited bucks.
I wonder if Ed has the time to put a .25 barrel on the existing new .30 single shot, fire a few .25 cast slugs of 75gr and larger, and call it a “Magnum”. That would be easy enough to do! I believe there is a market for that type of “slug-gun” in .25 caliber! And it wouldn’t take Ed much time to swap barrels. Hmmmm…I wonder if that is possible to do at home? Perhaps a “kit” for a project gun. a .30 down to .25, or existing .25 beefed up with .30 valve/reg?
I’d cut my shot count in half for those kind of results for serious pest control. I’m getting almost 70 now, I could certainly live with 35.
How about it Ed? You’d be the only man on the market with a .25 “Magnum” slug gun!!! We can’t just keep pushing the calibers larger and larger…why not maximize the potential of the smaller .25, as it can hit as hard as the .30 if the slug is traveling fast enough!

I have similar intentions but with a 85gr .30cal HP at about 800fps in a 1-14 twist match barrel, Im going a little more custom in the valve a reg department though.. this will be my close quarters deer gun..
HOOT, part of the reason that I wanted a 30 cal R3 Matador was to see what changes Ed made between the 25 cal and the 30. I tried a couple of Hart .257” barrels and also a TJ .257” barrel on my R3 25 long; the 25 long just didn’t have enough power to push my 55 grain cast .257” bullets at anything over 750 fps.
While waiting for my 30 cal R3 long, I bought a FX Boss. BIG mistake! I couldn’t get the stock regulator to shoot the 46 grain JSBs over 870 fps no matter what I tried and I tried a lot of things. I tried removing the stock reg and adding an Altros reg. It didn’t do any better. The only way that I could get the Boss to shoot faster than 900 fps was to remove the reg and just shoot off of the bottle. I could get speeds in the 950s, for 17 shots and the shot string had a huge bell curve!
All of the people on the Yellow hate Edguns but, they love Fx guns. What a bunch of uneducated morons!
I sold the Boss and I was happy that I only lost $800 on the sale!
As delivered, my 30 cal R3 long shot the 46 grain JSBs at 948 fps and I know that there is more speed in it if needed. My Hart and Tj barrels will fit on the 30 cal. All I need to do is put one of my R3 25 cal breeches on the 30 cal, screw the barrel on and see what I can come up with.
Ed has made some changes on the 30 cal regulator. I have had the gun torn apart all week and I have wanted to take comparison photos of the differences between the 22, 25 and 30 cal regulators. I hope to do so this Sunday and if I get it done, I will post pictures in my 30 cal R3 topic.
If the 30 cal has enough “headroom” to shoot my cast .257” slugs at 850-900 fps or higher, I can modify my spare 22 cal air valve/regulator assembly and bring it up to the 30 cal specs. I think! If I can do so, I will put the modified regulator in my R3 25 long and see what I can come up with.
I would really like to have a .257” cast slug R3 and a 30 cal JSB 46 grain R3 that shoots really well, take them to the AOA Extreme Bench Rest shootout this year and kick Fredricks ass!
Rossall doesn’t know it yet but, being the cheap bastard that I am, I plan on sleeping in his garage while I am out there. 😆

I was a mouse click away from ordering a .30cal Matador Std but decided against it for one reason, I already have .25cal PCPs and I couldn’t see me using a 47gr pellet spitting .30cal for anything that I couldn’t use my .25 cal slinging a 36gr pellet for.. So I got thinking.. I want a .30cal but I want it to have at least enough energy to take deer or pigs..
The building of a reg and valve is not really the challenge, I have my doubts whether the Matador Hammer design will have the mass and inertia to free the amount of regulated air required to push a .30cal 85gr slug that fast even with spring mods etc. I may leave out the reg all together and tune it for hunting.
The action will definitely need beefing up and I plan to make a longer single shot action with the barrel mount and transfer port all included in the one piece breech for added rigidity..
I have three options here;
* Make a heavier hammer and an extension for a longer heavier hammer spring that extends forward of the spring tensioner..
* Base the build on a different PCP with a more tunable “in line hammer” design. 🙁 (I was hoping to used the Matador for its larger air cylinder specs to achieve approx 10-12 shots)
* Build one from scratch.. I have the means and capabilities but the only suitable material for an air cylinder available to me is 1 1/4″ OD so shot count will suffer. I have a friend who makes big bores here and to him 85gr @ 800fps (120)ftlbs is child’s play.. he builds pistols that can achieve that.. I have showed him my plans and he thinks 100gr cast bullets at 950fps (200ftlbs) is easily achievable.. he has scratch built many big bore PCPs so I will take his word for it..
Ill ponder it over the next few weeks of my holiday and eventually make a decision..
