Q:

Optimizing the .22 Edgun Lelya

Hi All,

I picked up a .22 lelya some 10 days ago and have, due to the time of year, had little time to play around with it.

It came shooting the 18gr JSB at 232m/s (761fps) and increasing HST I was able to peak at around 239m/s (784fps)… reg seems to be set at just below 130bar.
Theres not too much information available online (in english) regarding this little rifle so I turn to those in the know with the following questions;

1. 18gr@784fps vs. 15.9gr@832fps (at its current setting) ?
2. or, detune the rifle (reg + HST) to save on ware and tear of parts (how resistant are the internals anyway? Isnt the lelya based on the pistol Veles which started out as a .177?)

I know I can fill her up to 240bar but I like to keep it at 200bar as it makes for easy pumping whenever Im out of air and that gives me 15 full power shots down to 130bar.
Accuracy seems to be good but I have only had the opportunity to shoot out to 15m… with an additional moderator this rifle is super quiet so no neighbors will be disturbed by this one, thats for sure.

Thanks, Q

EdGun

Dear Hoot,

your words are like poetry and, may I say, very soothing to the ear.
I was about to go with SECoda’s suggestion but all this talk about prize bulls, blind dates and 200m beak shots might have swayed me in the other direction…

I will just wait for this year to end so that I finally have time for myself and my rifles… full test coming up with a more educated guess on hardcore vs softcore /

Q…don’t de-tune that little rascal! If you owned a prize bull, would you castrate it? if Secoda were your friend, would you brag about it? If Old Goat were your date tonight, would you go?

Only you know the answer to these questions…but the Lelya is up to the task at its current settings for many thousands of shots! More shots that most people could afford to shoot in a normal lifetime. Yes, the Lelya started out as a carbine version of the
Veles, a little powerhouse of its own. It was here…yes my friend, here on this forum that the idea of pushing the Lelya to .22 caliber was conceived. By Mamcrackin, I believe, may he rest in peace, wherever that may be.

Anyway…you will be old and feeble before you break that bullpup. I have never heard of anyone breaking one. Perhaps a spare valve stem might be in order, but I have never heard of anyone breaking one of those in the Lelya. In fact, I’ve been bugging Ed to make me one in .30 caliber, but he said the shot count would be too low to suit him. I told him I didn’t care…then he said the pellet was so big, it would stick out of the muzzle when I loaded it. Well…I couldn’t argue with him on that point.

So, enjoy the power. There are videos on Youtube of Ed shooting the beaks off of those black Russian crows from 200 meters, and more!

If it works, and it isn’t broke, don’t try to fix it. Let it do it’s job for you. Just put a decent scope on it so you can determine whether you want to shoot your game in the eye, or try to hit just the black pupil without touching the iris?

Post pics…or none of this happened.

Regards,

Where do you live? We have a ten month season with a limit 0f 20 and they are about to declare squirrels a pest here.

quote qpush:

I would love to get me some squirrel, they seem to be tasty… but they are protected species so that a no-no.
Other than that, I agree on looking at the possibility of a detune in order to get some good mileage out of her 🙂

That really sounds nice. Like a more powerful P-Rod. If you can get 20 FPE with the 15.9s and they are really accurate It would be the perfect around the house chipmunk and squirrel gun. I see no reason to stress the valve on a beauty like that. 750 FPS and 15.9 grains seems perfect. You would have a 60+ yard squirrel gun if you can hit them. 🙂
