Spin Loc Conversion

I finally took my 4 jaw chuck out of its box and put it on my lathe to try something. I have been wanting to try and convert my older frames to the newest spin loc. I was using my old frame for something and I took it all apart today so i can try to see if I can cut the recess for the spin loc collar. This frame is the one I used on my first .308 until I realized it needed to be a side cocker. It’s been a test frame for the anodizer to strip and now it is for the collar.

After building my .308 with the newer frame there’s no comparison on how good the collar fits the valves and how it stops as soon as the valve hits the frame. My .25 and .257 are on older frames and I have wanted to make them spin loc. Always seems like you can keep tightening the tank after it hits the frame.

Doug, I scribed it and then rough cut it with a rotary file. The pic shows a sanding arbor I turned down to the right size to smooth the cuts with.
It was very slow dirty work. I wouldnt want to do it again.
I like it alot better now. Even with 3 set screws that old style collar was still walking out on me.

Nice. What’s the cutter look like?

It took about 15 min to indicate it in the 4 jaw chuck. Then about 15 min to cut and check and make it a little deeper. I was only taking .010″ a cut.

I’m going to machine a couple of blocks that fit over the frame. One to go on the scope rail and one to go where the forearm grip goes to push the jaw out past the step. Then I can put it deeper in the chuck about a inch.

I did the same mod last month, only I did it the hard way with a flex-shaft down the frame 😯 It took about 2hrs. Doug’s probably took 10 min.
I recommend Doug’s way.

Looks great like i said wish i had the tools and skills

Sweet! 😀
