scope setup question!!

Okay I have a strange question. I know that with scopes that have adjustable objective or side focus, that the adjustments aren’t always accurate. Its always good to verify that the scope is in fact adjusted to a particular range. I.e. if the scopes dial is ranged for 10 yards, it should be in focus for 10 yards. We all know that this is not the case however. To test this is simple. Set up a target at range (10, 20, 30, etc.) And see if its in focus and re-mark accordingly if needed. Which leads me to my question. How large should a target (lets say a letter) be to check the focus at any given range? Im not sure how to word this, if the question seems confusing… 😳

The primary purpose is to adjust parallax, not estimate range. The latter is a nice benefit of the former, but the focus will vary based on your eyesight, how the diopter adjustment is set, etc. It is set correctly for a particular distance when the image does not move when you move your eye off the centerline.

Target size doesn’t matter! Using a low mag, parallax adjustment is quite useless, you won’t see changes unless you have outstandingly excellent eyesight. But when you use a high mag, say 30x, the sight picture should snap into and out of sharp focus/parallax quickly. Use the highest mag available, when setting sight picture focus, via the parallax adjustment. This way a very slight movement of the parallax adjustment causes the sight picture to go out of focus/parallax. Where as say at 3x, a full turn of the Parallax adjustment is just barely, if noticeable. When the sight picture is in sharpest focus/parallax, mark the turret/wheel with the distance to your target. I recommend using highest mag available, because that mag will show sharpest sight picture when the parallax is correctly aligned. 😎

When I say focus, I’m not talking about the reticle focus ring on the ocular/eyebox or the focus ring on the end of the rifle scope that’s closest to your eye! 😎

Almost forgot, always turn the parallax turret in the same direction. Should you go too far, turn the turret back to where you started and start all over again. Parallax turrets always have some slack/slop. So turning the turret in opposite directions won’t yield the same results. 😕
