Removing the wire brush from a bore snake

After i finished typing it i saw the potential that frase had but i left it well alone to see who’d see and jump to the open invitation … I was expecting either The Hooter, Coda or Whineyman to jump all over it but you beat them all ,this time.

This may be obvious to all and everyone but when you pull the snake, do it straight out and don´t let the Nylon string drag/grind against the Crown. STRAIGHT out. Capiscé ???

I don´t know for a fact but i don´t think they´re any softer than other barrels. The rifling is very shallow in comparison to powderburners but them being soft – i don´t think so. That very shallow rifling would be my main concern and the Fact – and this actually is a Fact – there´s no need for an abrasive bronze brush in a bore that never sees any copper nor powder residue. Just plain lead. Use a good lead remover, let it soak a 1/2 an hour and use a Nylon brush to remove those more stubborn lead flakes (if any present), a few dry patches untill they come out clean and an oiled Patch if you aren´t going to use the gun inside 24 hours. Done. Remember to pull a dry Patch before shooting next time to remove the oil if you oiled the barrel . No oiling needed once it gets little lead thru the bore since lead is quite effective preservative but whenever i do a thorough cleaning i want to protect that clean metal surface from rust , thus i oil. When humid a guns bore starts to rust in short order.
I actually use JB Bore Paste and “polish” (not really) the barrel every 1000 or so shots and i just did a new thing i´ve not done before and used “Autosol” Metal Polish and really polished the WST barrel. We´ll see if it was worth the effort or not, can´t do any harm anyways.
A Gun will shoot funky 20-30 shots after a thorough cleaning but after a while the accuracy is back with a Vengeance.

I think we have a bit different notions about “snug” here. Don´t believe everything you see on a Video, read on the Net OR hear from me. Go and buy a proper size snake, remove the brush and pull it through. Now THAT´S how “snug” should feel. And when snug it does the job it´s intented to do – clean the barrel quite well. The use of a Bore Snake shouldn´t be considered as a replacement for periodical,thorough cleaning of that barrel though but it can be a good practice to give it a once over with that Snakey after every shooting session worth the name, 200 -300 pellets or so.
Now, some people say to never clean a barrel untill the accuracy goes South but i disagree ; Once the bore is that dirty it´s too dirty.
Competitive Benchrest shooters (Rimfires in this case – just due the fact RF rifles also use lead bullets) clean their barrel after every Card / between Cards and eventhough an AG doesn´t have any powder residue those pellets contain Lead (you all know what Lead exposure can lead to, just look at Snipergay) and a layer of lead builds up in the bore. Little lead is good for AG accuracy , too much isn´t thus the groups widen up . That´s your rifles way of saying : Clean me, you lazy bastard.

All my rant is, again , just something you read on a highly questionable , although very good , Forum on the Net but that´s how i see it.

A .177 has a snug fit ?? No, it certainly does not fit tight enough. There´s a reason those Snakes are caliber specific = there has to be adequate amount of pressure against the bore so the Snakey can do its intented job and clean the barrel instead than dragging out the top layer of leading.
Now – order a .22 cal Snake and remove the brush. It´s done in few minutes (the removal) and you´ll have a somewhat correctly sized Snake.

I thought they only made them in .17 cal. There were none available for .20 cal and up when i stripped my first Snake. That sounded a bit weird … :whistle:

… and after i checked that link i see they still don´t offer them brushless in anything else but for .177 cal.
I rest my case and go and strip one more snake !

That´s all it ever needs. No need to drag a bronze brush thru an airgun barrel.
Just keep the Snake clean (wash it often) so you don´t drag shit in/out of the barrel and store it in a Ziploc- bag.

I´ve used those brushless snakes for a long time, for all different calibers , and even on my rimfires and they work well.
Neither a .22LR nor an AG barrel ever gets anything else than lead thru it (except of course the RF barrel deals with powder residue etc) so a hard bronze brushes , made to remove inbedded copper/tombak has no place in a delicate AG barrel. :Fishing Hole:
