Cleaning the barrel, DON’T DO THIS!
Alright, so last nite I decided my barrel need a cleaning. I had bought some Beeman cleaning pellets so I wanted to try them out. Instruction said for PCP use one pellet, so I followed instructions. I was chronying so I figured I’ll just fire the cleaning pellet (felts) through the chrony and see what kind of velocity I was getting. Took aim and BOOM! I don’t know what it was but I reckon it was a sonic boom. HOLY SMOKES!
I have a TalonP with LDC, and it’s quiet as a whisper shooting NORMAL pellets. But for some reason shooting the cleaning pellet cause this tremendous sound. Too bad the chrony gave an error reading, but I reckon it must have been over 1300 fps. Of course I wasn’t wearing hearing protection, so my ear ranged for a few minutes. Maybe one day I’ll chrony it properly just to see how fast it is going.
Anybody ever made this mistake? Tcmalker rarely makes a mistake but he will admit to it. Anybody curious about this should try to shoot the cleaning pellet through their shrouded rifle just to see what happens.

Why not in front? Dunnit a couple of times to reduce the otherwise deafening noise they make. Seemed to work fine, but regarding your remark, there might be more to it so I am curious to know your thoughts about it.

Putting the felt pellet in fromt of the lead pellet is a bit iffy. It can act as a barrel obstruction. It won’t bulge the barrel, but the fibres can find their way around the dome of the pellet that is trying to shoot thru the felt. This can put part of the felt, (fibres) between the pellet and the bbl. OOP’s . This could potentually cause a problem. 😯
I always put 2 to 3 pellets, (the felt ones) behind the lead pellet. with the first one soaked VERY lightly with FP-10.
Seems to work well if the bbl isn’t very fouled.

Just curious….did you, by any chance, put solvent or other “cleaning agents” on the cleaning pellet, or clean the inside of the barrel with a solvent/oil, before you fired it?
The last time I got that result was when I had cleaned a HW-55 barrel many years ago with a light oil and put it aside. Some weeks later, I shot it and it dieseled and I got a different “Crack” from a supersonic shot. It sounded more like a .22 long rifle.

Putting the felt pellet behind the regular pellet will allow air to pressurize. MOre so behind the pellet pressing the felt pellet against the barrel, out her way around the pellet is just pushing the felt pellet out not doing as good of a job. Not that I know if they work good or not

I use weedeater line, one end melted-flattened like a nail head and the other with a point to poke through patches (2-3 stacked). A plastic straw comes in handy to guide the rig out the barrel and past the shroud.
… and you want to use felt? But, they’ll survive that 😕
Get some decent strength fishing line. Some patches. Some Break-Free. Go to town!

Now with a lower power ag, all I need t do is put a cleaning pellet in the breach, Pour som #6 shot down the bbl. and place a cleaning pellet on top of the shot colum! Brilliant!!! 😀 A cleaning rod wth no jag on it should do fine for a ram rod to seat the top felt pellet.

I think BEEMAN’s old catalog or something used to reference them as ideal for small pest like a cat or dog in someones garbage and or mice and rats. But you have to use them at super low powers as anything going too fast obliterates them when they exit the muzzle. They sorta remind me of shotgun wads when they exit.
Something like a Crosman 2240 or a pumper with about 2=3 pumps might keep them intact and make them fly true

I’m not going to use it no more then (but I’ll save it in case I spot a problem cat or dog). I already have a Bore Snake coming. And please DON”T tell me they’re not good for air rifle barrels!

you are correct as to what you heard. Those felt pellets are super light. With many springers you would probably also get the sonic CRACK.
Its common with those things. The velocity tears those things up when they exit the bore….lol! And like RJ said, they can and will get stuck inside you LDC creating further problems when a pellet hits it on its way out.
