questions about gauge and valve for cricket

How can you tell old from new on a cricket?
When did they change the gauge from colors to numbers? PLASTIC TO METAL ON VALVE? Is there serial numbers that maybe refrenced to tell difference?

I read just 2 days ago that the metal valve hit about Ser. # 800
