My Wish – John Hagan
As many of you know, I’ve been in search of a way to suppress my .25 R3M. Neil has made me a few shrouds and LDC to accomplish this. His latest shroud was a screw on CF that allowed me to tighten it a lot and torque the barrel. However, I don’t know how to drill set screws in it to hold it in place. Although tight, it sometimes would loosen with me carrying it around the house. POI changed, so then comes Ernest and John Hagan who answered my prayers for a way to torque the barrel like the OEM baffle did. Well their solution was simple, use the OEM baffle nut and we’ll just customize a shroud cover that will have a screw off cap to reveal the 1/2 x 20 LDC adapter. I contact John almost everyday but with computers being a new technology to him since Ernest has him locked up in the basement, it took awhile for him to reply. Fast forward to today, I received the baffle cover. Please keep in mind, John did not anodize them to keep cost low but will be looking for a solution to get it to be black like the OEM shroud.

After I took it out, I thought to myself, “he forgot to put the 1/2 x 20 adapter”. The cover is flawless and seamless. I emailed him and said what happened to the 1/2 x 20 adapter. He replied, “go drink some milk and put on some rubber gloves, the cap comes off”. I thought he was lying but after my glass of milk and workout gloves, sure enough, there was a cap! Amazing work, I mean it was seamless and blended in with the rest of the cover.
After adding Neil’s 6 inch LDC, the Overall length of the gun is 37 inches.
I am very happy with this cover, no more worries about knocking the shroud out of place or changes in POI and most importantly, the shroud is free floating like OEM.
My only, suggestion, is that it could be about 1/2 – 3/4 of an inch shorter.

as you suggested that it’s better to make the cover short by 1/2″ -3/4″. why not 1″ I’m wondering. I have ordered one from John and told him to make it shorter.
The gun is only 31 inches without the LDC. So that’s 2 inches longer than OEM. When I am shooting at my house, I have it resting on a Caldwell Deadshot so the extra 6 inches is not a problem. With the NC Carbon Fiber LDC, it doesn’t add that much weight to the gun. Still comfortable to shoulder. As for cost, I was able to unload everything I didn’t need so I didn’t loose too much. The only thing I have that is not on the gun right now is now a rare .25 R3M screw on shroud. Neil said that he will no longer make these for the Matadors. Only slip-ons from now on. That cost me $145 but I am not looking to get rid of it. As for the Cricket I have CF shroud coming for that as well 🙂 If I had to pay $500 extra to make my gun quiet enough to shoot peacefully in my backyard I would do it. My neighbors don’t mine me shooting but I am just considerate like that. :thumb:

I guess shooting in the back yard on a bench, a few inches longer does not matter. The adaptor and the LDC are very well made and did the job as required, but now the cost of the whole gun is up there with the best of airguns.

I’m thinking a $10 speaker hooked to his phone playing just a bit louder than several people enjoying themselves at a backyard BBQ would be plenty loud enough to mask rifle shot and impact.
Donny in his quest for silence! May I ask how much you’ve spent including shipping with all the shrouds/ldc’s to finally obtain your desired silence?

One other question to consider. How is grouping at distance. Any change in barrel harmonics due to extra length and mass on end of barrel?
I think if it were me I would have threaded outside of existing front tube cover then had new baffle screw on over it instead of all the additional parts and internal spacers. You could then make a nice cap cover that protects threads when secondary silencer not installed

Personally, I like the idea as it’s all ‘undoable’ and you don’t have to faff around with the barrel tensioning nut torque with :hoot: special Russian torque wrench (c)

The Cad
It is just as quiet with Neil’s shroud and LDC combo. I thought I was getting double baffles (OEM + Neil’s) but Neil’s LDC is already getting you maximum quietness so it can’t get any quieter. Only noise you hear is the hammer slap and pellet impact. The big plus with John’s method is that you maintain the OEM’s torque on the barrel so that POI doesn’t shift.

How do you like the combination of the Neil’s shroud with the OEM? Is it a big improvement in reducing the sound?

Ok let me help John out and try to clear some things with this cover. I did ask John if he could shorten the cover but he said there’s not much room to shorten it without jeopardizing the strength at the adapter end. He is correct, he made this thing as short as possible and here are some pictures to show it.
With the cap on the overall length of the cover is about 7 inches.
I took a stick and placed it inside the cover and marked it with a sharpie
As you can see, he started the adapter right after the baffles.
So if I placed the stick next to the baffle cover, you can see that the support for the 1/2×20 UNF adapter is about the size of the cap inside the cover.
There’s not much he could do to shorten this thing. Hope that helped 🙂
