R3M Post-Ernest
I got one of the earlier .25 R3Ms, which had indexing issues and a host of other minor problems needing fixing. After getting one of Doug’s (Ridetoeat) cam levers, the gun went out to Ernest for fixing up, including one of his metal valve stems.
It arrived at work today, so after getting home, I put a scope on, pumped it up by hand and re-zeroed the scope. By this time, it needed an air top off, so back to the hand pump. I’m not expecting much accuracy, especially since I spent a good chunk of yesterday breaking shale in fence post holes, using a digging bar. Now, after hand pumping and no practice, I figure I’ll be lucky to hit a tennis ball at 40 yds …well…
Top group is ten shots, the other have five shots each, shot from top to bottom, using a field pod, no bench. Bottom line: the R3M is now a serious shooter. All the mechanics are smooth, aligned and comfortable. If it can perform this well under crappy shooting conditions, it will at least equal the Cricket, so I’m stoked!

I have been shooting my Leyla almost exclusively since getting it, stays in the car on on the boat, I has taken a lots of birds, a ground hog and numerous water snakes at the marina. Still shooting lots just not on line much…

I did slightly enlarge the angle of breech opening, and the smooth bore enlarge and polish, the big thing is the mag, if you remove the oring and slide a pellet through the bore vertical pointing down the pellet will hang tightly and when push through will catch an edge on the oring groove, if you look closely the pellet has been resize and have some sharp cuts on head and skirt, I wanted the resizing of the pellet in the land & groove of the barrel to do this the mag holes has to be bored out till the pellet slide freely on its own down ward. every time I do this I notice increases in accuracy and smooth bolt – mag – closure fallow through.
Gracias Donny. This was the second rifle Ernest improved for me. Took it out pesting yesterday and nailed three rabbits with three shots; very easy to transport these bullpups. This R3M is spitting pellets at about 915-920 fps, a little faster than my Cricket. On the Edgun, Ernest cut the ES down to around 5 fps, vs, 10 fps it had before.
Wanta Edgun, I doubt any beveling was done in front of the mag; I never had that issue. The .25 Kings always fit cleanly inside the mag with nothing sticking out to catch. The loading issues were twofold: mag didn’t advance correctly and the pellet loading probe was banging into the side of the breech (not centered), which prevented me from shooting the gun to any extent; I did not want to wear a groove in the brass. Both issues were fixed and the R3M will see some serious field hunting now. Groundhogs and rabbits are a problem this year. After “removing” about 150 squirrels at this site last year, there are very few causing issues. Rodents, they never let up for long.
I am interested to know if he beveled the area just n front of the mag. I keep hainvg a problem where the pellet that is three or four clockwise from the one being loaded will catch on the top surface of the bolt housing. I’ve though about cutting a slight angle into it just to help push that pellet back into the mag a little more. I make sure the pellets are pushed in all the way but they still catch sometimes. Shit, I gotta leave for work right now and can’t finish this though process.
That Ernest is one hell of a guy 🙂 Congrats on your laser accurate gun Bogman, I know you weren’t too happy with it when you first got it.

What optic do you use with the Lelya?
I never received the Lelya Ed had at the Spring gun show. But I’m still interested in that little gun…looks to be a great deal of fun for close up pesting. I finally gave up and got a used Cricket .22 and it gets the job done. We are not guaranteed to get what we want, or are promised. That’s just life. You take what you can get and live with it!
