Got a question about the effectivness of the
AF Sound Loc kit, in relation to the drilled barrel bushing. how effective is it, compared to say, one of 220Swift’s (Airgun Advice forum, Rapid stuff) air strippers? I know most of the AF guys dont use something like that… I’m not going to go to the expense of getting one of Swift’s air strippers, but I’ve been wondering about it, for a while.

Thoughts? I know Tony uses the drilled baffle (hell, I’m sure he INVENTED it!), to great effect… it’s just curiosity… Also- here’s something else I’ve been wondering: Where to place it? In line with the muzzle (no barrel protruding), or behind the muzzle (baffle is “x” distance from the muzzle)? Just wondering what you guys have found out, or recommend…

I’m going to build a full barrel shroud for a Theoben Rapid. I’m hoping this will work. Long tube, with the sound loc stuff on the inside, capped off w/a SS endcap.

Except for this rifle I think Swift used three barrel bushings… I’m sure the barrel’s longer than the one I’m planning on using. Only 16″ OAL… with over an inch in the receiver… I think I’ll be fine w/one more vented baffle…
I guess what you are doing is you are planning on using a longer shroud than the kit will fit. I think what you will have is a space of an inch or so between the end of the barrel and the first K baffle. If you have a tube or such that extends from the bushing to slightly beyond the end of the barrel you could use some washers and thick 1″ o rings to build a spaced stack between to fill the gap. This would provide extra baffling and can be adjusted to fit. I would recommend neoprene, plastic or rubber.
I actually got the idea from Ernie… He built a new shroud for a custom Vanquish, and at the muzzle of course was his air stripper, but between his rear shroud mount and the air stripper were two (or three?) of these drilled bushings. BSA does this too, but their barrel shroud is only for looks, so the bushings are in there only as support for the barrel and shroud so nothing shifts around. Since I’m just going with extruded tube as my shroud, I am a little worried about clipping… I guess I’ll just say screw it, and order up a 4th k-baffle, (at $12.50! WTF AF?! 👿 ) and a drilled bushing and have a go at this shroud to see what happens… If anything, the shroud will be an epic fail and I’ll have Ernie knock me up a shroud… for $500 FML 🙄
Ernies stuff, (220 swift) is the crem della crem! Period! And cost like it LOL!!!
I see no reason why you couldn’t use a third drilled bushing from Tony, or factory bushing and place it nearer the muzzle. It would act much like what Doug is doing in some of his builds. 😉
