Q:

breech modifications

Hello all! I’m looking at modifying an old breech here pretty soon, and was wondering- How large of a bore can I go, and not mess it up? I know that there are orings in there… Do I really need the orings? That is, if the clearance between the barrel and breech is tight enough. I have a 12″ .30 barrel I’m going to use, and it has a larger machined down area than your standard AF barrels. That’s the reason I’m asking. I would also need to make a new top hat, I know… One thing after another!! Are we sure we shouldn’t call these AF rifles J.E.E.P. rifles (Just Each and Every Penny)??

Yeah, I thought about that… I’m not going above and beyond what the stock valve is capable of. I’m not even modifying the port in the tophat when I have a new one made… I’m just dealing with bone-stock Talon pressure ranges. Doug, when I get around to doing up the .30, you think If I sent you the barrel, you could knock me up a new breech and tophat for it? Nothing special, basically just copying the stock stuff, just sized for that .30 barrel. Thoughts?

I use delrin on my .257 with same size breech. I have shot it at 4000 psi and made 244 fpe. I do use aluminum on the .308 and will on the .257 sooner or later. The only thing is I don’t cock with the breech. Aluminum makes it hard to cock with heavy hammer springs.

Keep in mind that with a bigger bore in the breech you make it weak,
When you shoot high power ( solids) it’s possible that it burst.

I use aluminium for a big bore breech.

pooop… getting this .30 barrel to work is getting less and less motivating. Well, at least I’m not looking to build it for a while! Thanks to all for the helpful info!!

That is the the size of the o ring and tophat.

sorry for my noob question what is a 012 oring and TH?

Barrel machined to .374 with 012 o ring on hammer side and TH side.
TH sleeved to .374.

No you have to use o rings.

and that would eliminate the need for the Orings?

Barrel should be machined to .374″ and use a 012 o ring on the hammer side and a 110 on the TH side.

Just make a new breech out of 1″ delrim and turn it down to .960″ I bore the hole .004″-.005″ larger then the barrel.
