Q:

Cricket Silencer

Hi,

Do you know if the holes in silencer’s baffles are bigger than the hole in the “muzzle” of the silencer? Or maybe they are the same?

Thanks!

I agree 100% Lets just keep low on the subject,,,,

The truth is most LEOs do not even know NFA federal or state laws regarding firearms. Oftentimes if a patrolman pulls a guy over and he is unsure the officer will call dispatch and send a subject manner expert to the scene or station. Enforcing gun laws is not a normal function of the average LEO. Gun laws are so complicated it is easier to detain the suspect and investigate. On the federal level it’s a whole different manner. The ATF knows the laws and it has no fear about enforcing first and investigating later. The secrecy about LDCs is based in this fear. Having worked with and dealt with the feds on many unified command operations I believe it is wise to be careful. Laws are not being broken with airguns but still, you don’t want to be a project for a rookie investigator

I do not know I was just told when I got into PCPs to call them LDC NOT silencer, Just keeps the feds off our ass. Just what I was told and it makes since to me if you look up north to Canada , There Air gun laws SUCK, We are lucky in the good ole USA, but we have to be careful of the ” we will protect all dick heads in power.

While it may seem laughable to some at times, individual local law enforcement aren’t the potential greatnics. Back in the roaring 80’s paintball “silencers” were considered an NFA device by ATF and some airsoft silencers had importation stopped within the last few years.

I’m not the guy yelling fire in the theater but interpretations change with the tide. :2cents:

quote Beermaker:

This subject raises my blood pressure every time. After getting yelled at by Yellow Steve for inquiring about Neil Clague’s (one of his sponsoring dealers) products, I asked my neighbor about “silencers.” He is a Sherriff deputy and former USMC marksman, so he is well aware of what a silencer is and is not. He basically laughed at the notion that any law enforcement agency or prosecutor would give two shits about a quiet air gun. Now, whether or not a sound dampening device is legal for hunting is a different story. Consult the laws of your respective state.

He said the only way said “silencers” on air guns would be patrolled is if there was complete peace on Earth and the authorities had nothing else to worry about. He also pointed out that if the air gun components were truly classified as “silencers,” Neil Clague and anyone else making such devices would already be in the poky. He also informed me that I would be with them for owning some without having the proper credentials. I have been at the range I belong to several times and shot right next to various police. They just admire the accuracy.

I still, for the life of me, cannot figure out why the Yellow is so paranoid about this. I do NOT want to start a Steve-bashing thread, but I think it is fairly silly for him to enforce that needless rule so adamantly.

Yea I think it’s pretty stupid, although it’s not just the yellow that is all paranoid about airgun LDC’s, pretty much every major AG forum I’ve been on has had a “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy towards them. As you said I really doubt many LEO’s truly care about or pay attention to airguns as most consider them just toys…. and anyway even if you could find a way to attach a airgun suppressor to a firearm most would be completely destroyed after a few shots due to the high temp and pressure… whataya gonna do though 😕

I once responded to a mass murder where the victims were mowed down by a car. THE CRAZED driver was angry about people blocking the streets in a farmer’s market. So the psycho drove his car through the street market. Crazy lunatics will use anything to create mayhem and terror. By all accounts victims reported the driver screaming at them as he accelerated through the crowd. It was deemed an accident. Ironic how a car that can be turned to a weapon is never as “evil” as a gun.

That figures … In Sweden where just about everything is prohibited by the law we have to apply for a license for mufflers/silencers. I don´t think one can get a license for an Airgun silencer though- except for licensed pesting of small Vermin. Many, many people use silencers on their Airguns nevertheless. I´m , of course , not one of them vicked ones who deliberately break the Law. Wouldn´t cross my mind, heaven forbid … :geekn:
Then there are countries in EU that almost give away silencers for anyone who owns a Firearm – Finland, for one, comes to mind. IMO a silencer is a good thing and should be mandatory for Range use and in many forms of hunting. I don´t think anyone becomes a mass murderer just because he can buy a silencer over the counter at his friendly local firearms dealer. That´s all Hogwash … :angrymob:

A side note : You call them Lead Dust Collectors – here people call them Barrel Weights

quote Sir Ville:

Most good SILENCERS :suprisedn: start with smaller holes by the muzzle and they get gradually tiny bit larger by every passage/baffle. I guess an LDC (what is it a shortage for anyway ? Some new drug ??) is done the same way. Why, oh why is “silencer” a bad word among US airgunners ?? Is muffler as bad ? Sordino ?? Dolby noise reduction ???
Just kidding. I´d like to know why though ..

In the US , silencers (as pertaining to firearms) are regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934. They are heavily restricted nationally along with machineguns requiring a $200 tax stamp and a lengthy (up to a year) federal background check with photos and fingerprints. In some states like mine they’re just plain verboten.

The penalties for violating NFA are up to 10 yrs federal prison and $10,000 fine.

Right now devices pertaining to airguns are a not regulated as long as they can’t be “easily” (very amorphous interpretation) attached to a firearm. There is also the concept of intent in this.

Basically airgunners in the US are “gunshy” of attracting undo attention to the subject for fear of arbitrary and overnight decision making by the regulating authority
known as the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives. If you leave off the bombs there’s all the ingredients for a good time (taken in the proper order).

LDC= Lead dust collector. A firearms silencer/moderator is governed under the NFA from the year 1934. The law requires a tax stamp to be purchased at the cost of 200 dollars. The law was designed to create a tax so only the rich could afford silencers. This law also covered full auto, and short barreled rifles (below 16 inches on a gun equipped with a device to enable the gun to be fired from the shoulder). There is all kinds of hoops to jump through and depending on who’s in charge of the executive branch in can take awhile to be approved for a NFA tax stamp. I used to work for a class III dealer and most people would get a trust lawyer to start the process to purchase a NFA tax stamp and be approved for the purchase of a NFA weapon. In some states in the Union a NFA weapon is strictly prohibited for private citizens.

One thing the Federal government hates more than anything else is not paying them money owed to them. If one pisses off the Federal Government you can kiss your ass goodbye. Even if you win in court they will most likely bankrupt you and your family. That’s why we are afraid.

The greatest efficiency from the baffles is when they are as close to the diameter of the pellet as possible. I suspect they may be smaller than the hole in the shroud muzzle. But I could be wrong…can’t get to them easily to measure.

Hoot:

I think we suppose to call them LDCs , Or maybe baffles. Silencer is a bad word with the air gun people..
Just saying,
Mike
