Q:

Venting the frame

I recently bought a talon ss and I must say I am very impressed with the rifle. It has the soundloc system in it so I know that the front bushing is already vented. Is there any benefit to venting the frame under the fore grip with the soundloc setup? It is already pretty quite but it wouldn’t hurt to be a little quieter.

25 cal are a bit louder then the 22 cal. I would try and leave the factory top hat clearance and just added the O-ring and lube with silicon grease the velocity should come down a bit along with the sound also. The shot count will improve dramatically, more shot per same fill and will help it from washing at that air.

I forgot to mention that mine is a .25. Right now I’ve got it shooting the JSB 25.4 gr at ~700fps. I will try the O ring mod and play with the top hat some next time I have it out.

If you are just target shooting at home you can dial it down to 700 fps using JSB 16g. This will make it quieter, once it starts to go above this it will also become noticeably louder.

The top hat clearance is .077″ with a 1/4” ID x 3/8”OD x 1/16″W behind it should get you close to 700 fps with JSB 16g.

If you are hunting then you will need a LDC and or Frame Porting.

I’m not exactly old but not young neither. I’m 40. I already have some hearing loss from working in manufacturing my whole adult life. The noise doesn’t really bother me, just don’t want to get the neighbors riled up. I’ll probably save some money up and get a shroud or extender of some sort then vent the frame later on. Thanks for the help.

Yes and no.

It depends on your guns FPE the higher the more effective and your age and hearing also . If your young probably not if you’re old properly yes, it’s frequency related. That is way dbl is quiet hard to reference and is quiet subjective. A lot of gunners argue about the loudness, some can’t and some can tell the difference in.

I added a LDC and then ported out my Talon SS 22 cal it did help a little more, I’m 53.

If you’re young I would cough up the cost of getting a LDC form Tony and then think about porting the frame after.
