Q:

.30cal big bore PCP cast bullets

Ive found plenty of info on the .257 bullets but what .30cal bullets are you guys finding the best with what barrels and twist combos? Im looking to cast a few different bullets from 80gr to 130gr for my new .30 bullpup build but it seems the lee moulds are about the only options out there.. can anyone point me in the direction of some other suitable moulds? Im running a .3075 1-14″ twist Australian made Black Mountain match barrel with Lyman 105gr spitzers with a HP mod sized to .308 and getting about 1.5″ at 100y with 5 shots Av 900fps but I think it could do better with a flat or round nose.

There are a few rebated boat tails designed by Bob Sterne at Accurate Molds. If you give Tom the alloy, he can cut the mold to drop where you want.

A 14″ twist will be more than adequate; IIRC the 110 is above a stability factor of 1.5 in an 18″ twist barrel right at Mach. I plan to use Doug’s 14″ TJ liner with these two in my 308 Marauder build…:) err…build around a Marauder trigger more like it though
cheers,
Douglas

Did you try polishing the barrel, to maybe make the bullets shoot with less friction, you don’t have to , just my idea.

Thanks for your thoughts bud Ill be trying a few heavier bullets too, I have a couple of mates with .30 big bores that are sending me a bunch of different bullets to try, I’ll probably leave it tethered for bullet testing and film a few of each them with the slowmo scope cam to observe the stability characteristics out to 100m of each bullet too..
MOA at 100y is my goal and Im sure Ill find a bullet to do it.. My mate has also just made me a 105gr/85gr HP .309″ double mould too.. great for high speed closer shots on lighter game with good expansion..

Here’s a few of the bullets Ill be testing: No lube or gas checks will be on the ones I shoot 🙂

120gr FP

162gr FP and 151gr Hp

From the left…
113gr FP, 131gr spitzer; 127gr HP spitzer; 163gr HP, 157gr spitzer

Retest my 105gr HP

105gr HP and 85gr HP

My new larger HP 105 and 85gr in .309″

I think the twist might not match the light bullets your shooting per caliber.

With a 1-14, I would opt to try something around the 120-150 gr mark. 100 or 110’s might be too light

My Corsair when it was in 308 had a 1-20 twist. So it liked lighter bullets up to 150 grs. I used to shoot 148 gr HP which was a converted RCBS 150gr FN bullet (not the cowboy bullet). And those 148gr bullets were the BIGGEST I could go right before SLIGHT keyholing would start. I also LOVED the 115 gr FP solids by Lyman I believe. They gave me MUCH flatter trajectories and were a good match for the twist rate.

RJ Porter has that 148 gr HP mold now BTW

uch! Yep, that’s a little much for the sizing. Might try two different sizers, but they are even though having to be sized down so much, are still too large.

.003 is just about perfect for the sizer to handle at once without smearing, but the bullets need to me “NO” more than a MAX of .0005 over for AG’s.

bore slugs at .3074… Ive been sizing some .312″ to .308 and they are burring up in the grooves a touch

Wingy, .003 should be no problem at all. And using imperial sizing wax they will come out without any smudge at all. Just polished looking!

What does your bbl slug at?

I size to .30800″ and have no problem with them sizing down.

Great info guys thanks!
Id like to try some 110ish grain pointed spitzers for sure but it seems all the pointed moulds are designed for the 7.62×39 round and drop out at about at .311″- .312″ which is a little large to size down to .308 for my tight barrel..
Thank you to Mr rj-porter for your P/M too..

I also shoot these. 116 gr with a nice flat nose. Lyman 311316.

Next is the Saeco 120 gr round nose. Says 302 on the mold but not sure if that is the model.

Then for something heavy the RCBS 150 gr flat nose. It drops right around 158 gr with pure lead. I have it in hollow point and it is 150 gr.

For shooting distance it is hard to beat the pointed slugs.

NOE Bullet Molds, and Veril Smith molds. One of these should be able to hook you up Wingy! 😉

WOW nice weapon, pretty good groups, try any JSB’s yet or are they to light. JSB’s look like junk compared to what you are shooting!!

Thanks bud, JSB pellets are too light for this tune.. they are also designed to shoot in .300″ barrels, this is .307.5″.. I have shot a few JSBs as the air ran down just to see if it could but nothing on paper.. with a 3200psi fill a 47gr JSB breaks mach 1 at 1300+ fps.. I want this to be a bullet shooter not another pellet gun so hope to find a bullet that it really likes to shoot 900-1000fps..
