Top Hat Adjustment?
Hey All,
New here and have a condor ss just out of the box and read some things about top hat adjustment but nothing on how to do it or what it does,i think im shooting too fast to get best accuracy out of my gun,getting about 1 in groups at 35 yrds,will adjusting the top hat slow it down? Ive seen some utubes on polishing it but nothing on adjusting it.Also wanting to get it tuned when money allowes ,installed hawke sidewinder 30 6×20 ,expected better accuracy for a grand you know??Any help appreciated

Thought I would let you know that I got my one peice tophat fronm Tony and installed it per his instructions which was a piece of cake and have not crhonographed any shots yet but Man what a difference.I was shooting at 3 in stickers and could keep them all inside with most groups being about 1 and 1/2 inches with a flyer outside the cirle once and a while and this is at a lasered 50 yrds..51.8 to be exact.Now no more aiming at 3 inch spots ,filled gun sighted in, and first 3 shot group was one ragged hole then had a flier that was 1/4 in out of the group so I just kept shooting and after 5 shots the group was almost a half inch and after 10 shots the group was no bigger,1/2 in at 50 yrds pretty darn good so thought lets see what itll do at a 100 yards,first shot was 3.5 mills low,second shot was 1/2 inch away from first,third was 1/2 away from that,then wind got me out to about a 1 and 3/4″ but first 3 were in 3/4″ in at 100yrds…WOW,Thanks Guys That’s what I was hoping for
I used an o-ring with the stock top hat. I did not need it with the TT quick change top hat.
I just ordered the top hat from tony,also what o ring do you use behind it and where to do you get those
I got my O-rings at my local Ace Hardware store. I put a 3/8″ OD X 1/4″ ID X 1/16″ X-section. They must be standard size because the store had them in their little self service o-ring cabinets with just those dimensions. The O-ring was probably the best thing I did to give consistency to my Condor SS… even before I replaced the top hat with the TT top hat, it made the factory one work better. IF I could have gotten it to stay adjusted at 0.090″ gap, I’d never have had to change. It just never would stay tight and in place.

I just went through all of this with my Condor SS in .22.
Stock top hat with powerwheel on 3 I was very hot for accuracy.
JSB 18.13 exact heavies were averaging 1082 for first ten shots
Baracuda 21.14 averaged 1027 first ten shots
14.3 Crossman Premiers averaged 1144 first tne shots.
All of these shots used a lot of air.
I felt like all of this was too hot and it turned out to be true.
I placed an o-ring on the top had and left my powerwheel at 3
Jsb dropped to 720 first ten shots
Baracuda’s averaged 665 first ten shots
I did not test the Cp’s
Air usage dropped
TT Quick change top hat installed SMALL regulator
FPS was more consistent and air usage was great. Accuracy was fantastic
JSB now averaged 785 first ten shots
Baracuda averaged 745
Crossman Premier averaged 854 first ten shots
Put in the larger restrictor into the TT quick change top hat.
JSB averaged 810 for first ten shots
Baracuda averaged 750 for first ten shots
Crossman Premier 937 for first ten shots
I have left the powerwheel alone and am using the tt top hat with the large restrictor.
I can shoot JSB 18.1, Baracuda 21.14, CP 14.13 and poly mags all grouping well under 1/2″ at 25 yards
My best group so far has been with jsb 18.13. It measured .035 for a five shot group at 25 yards.
You will be using less air and I can easily get 40 to 50 consistent shots before filling back up to 2900 psi.

Yep, it’s pretty much trial and error, but a Chrony will tell you immediately if you’re going in the right direction. I messed around with mine for about a month, then just ordered one of the TT one piece top hats and put the smallest restrictor in it and put an o-ring behind it. With my power wheel set on about 4-0, I’m getting right around 920 with the crosman hollow points. a bit less with the JSB’s. Mine really likes the JSB’s the best. I went from 1″ or so groups at 30 yards with the crosmans to a ragged hole (and not very ragged) with the JSB’s… little change when I moved out to 50 yards. I’ve done most of my shooting through a camera mounted to the scope too. I never could seem to keep the grub screws tight on the factory top hat. I’d get it shooting good, then groups would open up… check, sure enough the screws were loose again… finally gave up.
Sorry for the dumb ?.I found most of what I needed in another post in quick refrence section but not how much setting it at .70 thousands will reduce velocity.I know you can give me #s just wanted to know if it would be a lot or a little and I guess increase by 2 thousands and shoot more groups till I get best accuracy right?? Ok,I can get a chrono but how do you adjust it?
Do you own or have access to a chronograph? If not, you should look into getting one. Probably one of the most important tools in any Air Force owners “toolkit”!
If you’re going to be adjusting your top hat ( or tweaking other aspects of your gun) , a chrono will help you to track your results.

Gun is 22 cal and by new meaning have had for a couple of months and I have cleaned the barrel and checked all screws for being tight,have shot prolly 5oo times with powerwheel at 0, and higher with no improvements,I filled to 3000 till tank got low now filling at 2700 with same results,pellets are jsb 18.1 that are shooting the best,have 6 other kinds that do not do as well….Thanks for reply
Welcome to the forum! First off, what caliber is your gun?
If the gun is brand new, did you give the barrel a good cleaning?
What psi are you filling to?
What pellets are you using?
Where is your power wheel set?
It could be a lot of different things throwing off your shots. Give us a little more information to work with.

Late to the party on this one….
But I’ve had a Condor since they first came out… without hesitation, the best thing I ever did for that bird was to get the adjustable one piece top hat from Tony. Hands down… should be the very first thing that any Condor owner buys.
