Erector Mechanical(optical) Centering and spring set.
When the erector is centered the springs are at rest, I guess the reason most manufacturers store and ship their scopes this way. When the scope is zeroed, the erector is moved off of center. This changes pressure on the springs, either expanding or compressing them. Obviously the intended design feature. Left in one extreme or the other or zeroed could effect the springs tension. Weakening or causing a spring set. I’ve never had this happen as in my scopes are used.
Anyway, there seems to be some school of thought, that when storing or during long periods non use, to return the erector to mechanical(optical) center to let the springs rest while equalizing spring tension. This could maybe prevent wandering POI or the infamous Tapping/thumping the turret to get the slack/slop out. One school of thought is that scope springs cannot take a set, stretch or weaken because they’re pre-set and returning to center would just be a waste of time!
