What is the best performing REG out there?
Yesteday, a friend mentioned a “Ninja” reg. It was the first time I heard of such. All these time, I have been lurking around the forums, all I hear about are the Edgun and Cricket which, pls anyone correct me if I am wrong, both are standard equipment, and the FX reg which I understand is optional. I have no idea there are stand alone commercial regs.
So, please tell me, what is the least fuzzy, best reg out there?

Well I guess you can use any reg you want, but I have no advice on what the best one is.
With my .22 Edgun all tweaked I managed to get a SD of about 5, others have managed an SD of3.
In my limited knowledge on regs..anything under an SD of 10 is considered ok.
You can’t go wrong with any of the mentioned regs..Edgun,Fx,Cricket…
Sir, thank you for the kind words. But I have no abilities to speak much of. It is however, pure ambition and a dream of mine. It all started when i was about 8, when someone would not let me touch his air rifle, not even a simple caress of admiration for such a tool. I have to build my own, a desire fueled by that dream.
I can’t comment on the cricket reg cause I haven’t used one but I chose the edgun because it seamed to be highly regarded and it uses a large tube (compared to the marauder I had before). Another thing to consider is that the reg is only one aspect of shot count. If the path from the valve to the back of the pellet is too long or not shaped consistently, you are going to see a lot air waisted. I think that’s the main reason the mrod simply can’t get very good efficentcy. The path from valve to pellet is long. Just the transfer port from valve body to receiver is almost as long as the entire path from valve to pellet on my edgun. There is video somewhere of the fx guy shooting a “side valve” or slide valve or something like that but no info as to what exactly it is or how its shaped. I worked in power train development in the motorcycle industry and the question was always “what is going to replace the poppet valve?” It’s been in use for about 120 years in its current form and nothing has come around yet that really has threatened it. There are big moves to replace the way it’s opened, but nothing to replace it yet. I’ve played around with the idea of a rotating valve but you lose the ability to easily change “lift” and ” duration” . The only x reason I mention this is because I think the next big move in efficiency and maybe power could be from replacing the poppet valve and getting the back of the valve closer to the back of the pellet. There may be additional benefits such as a more stable platform during firing(less hop from the hammer hitting) but I’m getting a little off track. I just hope that video means someone with more resources and knowledge is working on it.
If u want to read about what others are doing with there projects I know there is a R&D section on the gateway to airguns forum and I’m pretty sure there is something like that on the main forum of tag. It’s not going to be bullpup specific like this beautiful little pocket of the world, but there are some very knowledgable peoples doing some near stuff around here.
I do not intend to sound blunt here but to me, there is but one and only one primary purpose for any any gun, that is, to shoot at a target. And that is my one purpose – to shoot.
I used to be into photography. I shoot at different subjects, different lighting issues, a gazillion of combinations of f stops and shutter speeds, and so they would ask the same question, what subject to photograph. It bears the same semblance with guns, to shoot at targets.
Since this is about airguns, whether for benchrest, hunting, or anything else, again, to me, deviation (velocities and/or air pressure) is of primary importance. There is no compromise. That is the reason that my concept gun would be based upon a good performing reg. The heart of the matter is always the air.
I do not have a regulated gun ever since, but I try to tune my gun to the best of my ability. I am not financially fortunate in life, so I can not afford a collection of guns. I just have one pcp, handmade with the most basic of tools of a primitve machine shop. I made my own stock of my own design.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot. My ultimate goal (over the next five to ten years or so) is to make my own rifle. I think u need to look at more than just “the best” regulator. I would look at what the primary purpose of the gun is going to be. If its a long range bench rest gun, weight and shot count don’t matter as much as the standard deviation. If u are looking for an easy to carry gun with high shot count, u want lite and small and the standard deviation can be a little higher. If its something in between, then u gotta decide which aspects are more important than the others. The reason this part is important, is because regs come in different sizes, the edgun regulator is huge compared to the altros reg, so it’s going to take up more room in the airtube. But, if u don’t need a short gun, u can use a long airtube and it won’t matter. If its going to be a bullpup, then even the edgun long is kinda short compared to a standard air rifle. U can go with a larger diameter air tube, but I think the edgun is using the largest I.d. U can go before u have to start really increasing the wall thickness to the point that your not getting anymore volume when u step up the size. But, none of that matters if its a bench rest gun and u are planning to shoot tethered. If that the case, u don’t really even have to have an internal regulator.

We’ll in that case… The cricket regulator would get my vote. Then followed by the edgun regulator.
I would imagine a cricket reg should be easy to come by. The edgun I’m not sure about.
Now there is also HUma regs. They make them for all sorts of guns. I have one in my p12.
They provide great support for there product. The reg in my p12 does pretty good.
I’ve only experienced the cricket and the HUma regs..

It may not be a plug n play … But regulators can be altered to fit any gun depending on the application.

Lets see you stick a 1 1/2″ wide Edgun reg down the throat of an AF tank, or make a special adapter to do it.
Can it be done..well kinda of, if you have a mini lathe and the ability to do it. That just seems like a major job..and you would be making a whole new assembly and just stealing parts. Waste of time and effort when there may be many off the shelf options.
We don’t even know what kinda gun this is for!
The gun will be built upon the reg, it is still in the creative design stage. It may or it may not become a reality. I have two other pcps, both unregulated. The gun will be primarily DIY… handbuilt, non commercial production. I have been thinking about this for a little while now.
This will be the forum I will share it first once I have it done.

Ninja reg… the built in regulator in a ninja paintball tank. Can be used on an AF gun (like most paintball tanks) when mounted with the CO2 adapter.
Generally these regs are set to the 800-900psi range. Low power, lots of shots, fun for backyard plinking

It does not matter..you don’t have the choice. Better worded question is best reg for my gun.
What gun do you have? You can’t use an Edgun,Cricket or FX reg..unless you got one of those guns.
The subject gun is still in the early design sketches. I am trying to build my own. If I get a good reg, everything will be based on the reg, the air tube where the reg will sit, and the rest of the gun. The form factor will be that of the bullpup, hence, I posted in this section.
I have been so curious about regs, but as luck would have it, I just can not afford to buy one. Necessity is the mother of inventions, so I guess I am in that territory for now. I thank all for the learning I gather in this forum.
Ninja is a good tank company that makes good stuff another company you might want to look into is Guerilla Air and their myth regs.

Glad it’s working out for u dman these really are surprisingly good for the cash I’ve used em for years never a fault with one yet the spring piston never fails like probs I’ve had with belville washer types [SMIRKING FACE]
