Q:

Muzzle Velocity drop after a hunting trip

Nothing out of the ordinary. Took my TalonP out for it’s first field day, and scored 2 squirrel and 3 grouse-hammer indeed this gun is. The grouse I hit in the shoulder sounded like hands clapping when they received the pellet. Now I had one shot at a squirrel that sounded very underpowered in the field. I chrony’d at home after hunting and had muzzle velocities of 320 and 420 fps when they were between 775-850 with the 35gr pellets. Is this a symptom of “Top hat Creep”? curious to know whats happening.

It’s super easy to change out also. Use 2flat blade screwdrivers (one on each side) and just pry out the old top hat. Push the new on in as far as you can by hand and then just dry fire the gun a few times till it seats. I run mine wide open all the time and never even touch my power wheel. I shoot mainly JSB’s (.25) and 7ring slugs. I just compensate for the different trajectories with holdover! Fun stuff!

Thanks Wildfire, for the confirmation. I actually expected top hat creep, had read it affected POI, and velocity, but wasn’t aware it affected velocity this much. In anticipation of this very symptom, after it’s first outing, I am glad I ordered Tony’s modified top hat before my rifle even arrived. Good to be prepared ya know? The other clue I had was I centered my crosshair on the grouse and fired, and saw the hit almost a body height above him, and when he sat there looking at me wondering if I was going to shoot at him again (how I love this bird’s stupidity) I hit hit square in the shoulder when centered on his feet. Again, surprising to see such an effect from the little guy working his way loose. I look forward to a package from TalonTunes, should be here any day now.

That’s the first thing I would check. Factory top hat is notorious for working its way loose. Best investment you could make would be to contact Tony at Talon Tunes and get one of his one piece “quick change” units. Trouble free and fully tunable. You’ll love it! :5:
