Q:

R3M black or wood?

Interested in opinions (and facts) comparing the black and wood R3M!

Which one is lighter and by how much? For cricket the black synth is quite heavier than the wooden versions. This does not seem to be a complaint in the edgun!
Which one is more hardy? Usually the wood is the one to be more careful with but I read tips about taking care of the black rubber and being too delicate!
Any other factor one should know about?

Thanks in advance

My cricket 25 shoots the 25 kings at 940 FPS. The report is less when compared to the Edgun 25. In all fairness the cricket is longer than my Edgun standard. I would think it would be fair to compare the Edgun long to the cricket. The 22 Edgun is extremely quiet

Thanks Keyser, appreciate the info.
How does the report compared to the cricket or other pcps with comparable caliber/energy you may have?

I don’t have bipods because I’m just that good at holding a gun freehand

But seriously I don’t have bipods because I use these instead:

Where I hunt most of my stuff are in trees or tops of buildings. I used to install bipods but after not using them for the reasons already stated I really found the bog pod useful. It can be shot from seated or standing positions. I also shoot off fences and other standing objects including car windows with one of these

Both guns were amazingly accurate out of the box. They got better after about 1000 rounds. In the beginning my FPS fluctuated a little and at times my groups would open to 1/2″ MOA at 50 yards. Both guns were pretty hot with the .25 shooting almost 1000 FPS and the .22 shooting 990. I followed Ed’s advice and didn’t touch the gun’s regulator until it had a chance to break in. Now the .25 shoots 940 and the .22 is at 905. They both are capable of one hole performance when I do my part. I have not experienced any quality control issues.

The wood is walnut. I could be refinished if need be, for your needs then the wood is a better choice.

Yeah, I started leaning toward the wood after reading all that.
BTW, I notice you don’t have bipods in either gun. Any particular reason?
Noticed also different level of accuracies reported by different owners. Your groupings are the best I seen. But then I see others complaining about over 2 inch grouping at 50yrds. Is there a quality control issues there with these guns or do the guns need tunings? Do you see difference in your two guns?

Thanks Keyser for the detailed info and the pictures. I was hoping someone have both guns.

I agree with your granddad. For my “working guns” like the HP browning and glock17, I don’t care much about scratches and view it as guns history (my cricket falls there too). But for my collectables like SIG P210 oh well I keep them in great shape (my huntsman falls there)! Having said that I still need to look for the more robust stock!

So what type of wood does the edgun use? I mean if its a good quality wood I would be reluctant to cover it with coating. If its an average wood then may be its a good idea.

Hi Awny,
They are the same weight, the black stock is wood covered with some black rubberish material and won’t take too much abuse. Dents is more visible on the black stock

Thanks Gerard (shokran). That explain my confusion. I thought the black was synthetic.

Awny,
I will try to answer your questions. I am currently (and forever) in possession of 2 Edgun R3M standards. Well one is for my 14 year old son but it is still here to compare. First off they both weigh exactly the same. Both guns are equipped with the 6.5X20X42 sidewinder tactical scope. The black one is a .25 and the wood is .22 Both guns weigh 8#2 ounces. The soft touch is not synthetic but it is wood with a soft touch finish from Italy. The soft touch rounds all the sharp edges found on the wood stock. The edges don’t bother me but it might be a factor for some. The soft touch is tacky and easy to carry with one hand. I haven’t noticed any issues with the durability of the finish but I suspect that they both are subject to the occasional love bruses. Like my Granddad always told me “a man who has a gun in pristine condition hasn’t really lived a full life. Remember this fact son, every scar tells a story”. I also own a .25 Cricket synthetic and it is a lot heavier and much more bulky. I would recommend that gun in wood and then take it to a smith and have the forend trimmed. The cricket cannot hold a candle to the Edgun in terms of feel, balance and weight. I like the look of the wood but the feel of the soft touch. If I had to choose just one I would go with the soft touch.

Side by side

Black

Wood

I hope this helps
