Q:

Removing Valve on Old Style Talon Tank

I am needing to send my tank in to be repaired due to leakage.
Is there any way that a common man can unscrew the valve from the tank?
I would save a great deal in shipping if I could just send in the valve.
Surprisingly ( actually not ), Airforce does not sell a tool or offer anything other than encouragement on this issue.
They advised to try to find a likely looking tool at an Auto parts store.
If I had the right tool, I think I could take it in to the local SCUBA shop, I know they have a vice.
I am a computer guy, not a mechanic type guy, although I am good with concepts of basic physics.
Thanks for any feedback !!!

I was in the same boat as you recently…

Go to Pandemic’s video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GfKFFuXOiw

Go to the 1:39 mark in the video and watch carefully – every you need to know is right there.

If you are at a loss about the 5/16″ rod you can use the SHAFT end of a 5/16″ drill bit – but make sure you use the shaft end inside the hole so you dont damage the hole in the collar.

Also MAKE SURE YOU DON’T PUT THE SHAFT INTO THE BURST DISC!!!

I didn’t need to put my tank in a vice and I didn’t need heat to losen up the ‘glue’ that the OEM puts on the threads of the valve collar where it mates with the tank.

It seems intimidating watching it but it’s actually very simple.

Thanks! I searched but didn’t get any of those results.
