Q:

Hammer wgt + Std Valve + 12" = useless

Hello,

A while ago I asked you guys if keeping the AF hammer weight in a talonSS with a standard valve and a 12″ barrel would be any beneficial.

Well here is my results with a 14.3 gr Crosman Premier:

Power set 2: ~835fps
Power set 8: ~835fps
Power set 12: ~ 835fps

with a 32.4gr EuiJin:
Power 2, 8, 12: ~640fps

So you get the picture: useless.
I assume it is wasting more air on the higher powers because the short barrel can only help so much in accellerating the pellet.

Am I missing something here?

I really would hope some feedback or similar experience on the matter.
Please let me know

In the mean time I am removing the hammer weight and maybe I will install it in the future is I get the hi-flo or the talonP tank.

Cheers
Chris

Cheers Anthony! I will have to order one then.

Yes,
It is a great combination.
Welcome to the Nuthut….

Interesting comments.

I’m new to the forum which seems to have good traffic which is good. I was encouraged to hear the soundloc kit worked quite well on your gun? I have a suppressor on my Gunpower stealth but was thinking of splashing out on a soundloc for good measure. The quieter the better for back garden target practice. Would people recommend the soundloc plus suppressor?

Hi Guys,

thank you. I will slowly move toward the Hi-Flo options.
I got the TalonP tank cause I ended up paying only $24 for it 🙂
It’s small and the shot count might be enough for the tree stand.

But you are right, The hi-flow seems the only way to get those pellets moving on a 12″ barrel.

I did a modified “Lowe’s” sound suppression job on the talon SS and it is working quite well.
I ported the bushing and added 4 chambers between the end of the barrel and the end of the frame.
I am considering porting the back of the frame to allow the trapped air to vent on the side of the frame.
That should take the extra air flow off the front and reduce noise.

As it is, even at “waste level” power, it is still much much quieter than my 24″ barrel on the other Talon running a Micro-meter tank!

Cheers
Chris

i recommend converting your reg-flo tank to hi-flo (only run you about $40 in parts from AF – i posed the exact parts list in separate post) and then buy an adjustable top-hat from talon tunes… this way you can have power when you want it and shot count (low power) when you want it – just by changing out the top-hat insert.

have your cake and shoot it too.

I would recommend you get the high flow tank and just live with the shortened shot count and extra noise if you have to keep the 12″ barrel. The talon P tank is going to give you even less shots at full power than the high flow tank.

Hi,

I have eperienced the same pattern so far with the standard valve.

I am trying to setup a “tree stand” backpack rig.
Everytime I go hunting I endup seeying more small game that big game so I take an air rifle with me.

From the tree stand, I need a rifle that can get as far as I can, cause I cannot get out of the tree every time I shoot, or get closer to the critter.
I am about 30ft up there sometimes and I need to shoot at other trees or ground sometimes 40yds-50yds away.
The targets are squirrels in winter coat ( a little tougher than the summer cousins), and sometimes a wondering possum or coon.
So that is why I am trying to get the most out of the rifle, and get the most range an power.

I am trying to get the power, but to keep it the short barrel to pack it easy.
I know I am close to the limit, but I think I can get few more fps out 🙂

I have just ordered a TalonP tank thanks to a birthday gift 🙂
I will see how that goes. If I can get the heavy pellets (Eun Jins 32.4gr) above 700fps It would be awesome!

I will keep you posted

Cheers
Chris

I could not get either of my Talon ss over 830 fps with a standard valve. All that happened by trying to get more was wasted air. You just do not have a long enough barrel to allow that extra air to give you more velocity. I did get real close to 900 fps with cudas when I swapped in my high flow tank. I think I was at 875 fps if memory is correct. But it was very loud and with a 12″ barrel you are still dumping allot of air out the end.

What power do you need? Even with the 12″ barrel and shooting crow mags at 775 fps I was able to easily take down ground squirrels and tree squirrels out to 40 yds. With 15 gr. JSB you still get plenty of power for small game and a flatter trajectory with a 12″ barrel. I can understand if you might be shooting at larger/ tougher animals wanting more power.

Hi Mrnewbie,

thanks for the feedback.
I had a feeling the std valve would just not be enough.
I was trying to get the most out of the 12″ because I need a “back pack” hunter/scout rifle that I can easely carry with other stuff.

I have a 24″ barrel that is definitely fantastic, but it is currently on another Talon setup for indoor target shooting.
It is also too long for my backpack setup.

I eventually took the additional AF hammer weight off last night and with a power 10 I get the same ~835fps speed and as you mentioned I can lower it if I need to.

I need to test top hat settings an maybe bring it a little closer to get some more travel.
I am hoping to get closer to ~850 or ~875 if possible.

Thanks again and If you have any suggestions to improve the current setup with easy tunes, please let me know.

Cheers
Chris

I’m guessing your goal in all this is to create more power/higher fps.

In short I think your opening up your valve all the way, every shot.
No extra hammer weight needed. Your just slapping around extra weight for no reason.
My older TSS has a 45 grain hammer and an add-on 20 grain or so weight, the 20 was used in the condors.

In short its hard to get a.22 12″ barrel shooting much over 950fps even with a high flow valve, no way with a standard or low flow.
The low 800’s sounds about right with a low flow..all is as it should be!

Take out that extra weight and your power wheel will at least let you go from 835fps down to 500 or so fps.

With the hi-flow you should be able to get to 900 or so fps.
If you need more…get a longer barrel, the rule of thumb is 10-15fps per inch.
So go to a 18″ barrel, pick up 60 to 90fps.
