Q:

New Ebony Skinner just off the bench for SAWTIME!

This blade is going to Sawtime and I hope he likes it.

A nice skinner in 1/8″ AEB-L with a Rockwell of 60.

Blade full flat grind and is 4″ to the plunge and 1.25″ wide at the ricasso. It has a nice machine satin finish.

Handle is Gabon Ebony with red and black liners and has a nice aggressive tapered tang.
I made the Loveless bolts for the handle with Nickle Silver and brass bolts.

OAL is 8.75″

Thanks for looking

Thanks guys 🙂

“case hardening”?

Oh man I only did a digital controlled heat treat with cryogenic treatment and quench.

Maybe one day I can do case hardening when I want a knife to suck…lol

BUT is it case hardened?!? LOL
Another great knife. You get into the folder game, I want on the list!

Great-looking, elegant blade there, WOK! Damn, Saw has me thinking about filet knives, too!

Saw, the two biggest questions are how big are the fish you’re cleaning and how flexible do you want the blade? For a lot of smaller fish, bending the blade as you slice can help you work around the rib bones. If you’re chunking steaks out of Tuna, heavier less flex is needed. Keep in mind how slimy the work gets; that’s an argument for finger grooves and a decent heel on the handle. Out here, 6-10 inch blades of flexible high carbon stainless work great on Crappie, Bass, catfish, etc. I use melted (not dyed) cheese wax to seal seams. It melts at low temperatures, does not get brittle, is super sticky and flexible. Plus, I get pounds of it to seal Shiitake mushroom logs. It’s easy to wipe off the excess so you don’t see it. It’ll stick to green oak logs, out in the heat-subfreezing, for years. This helps seal out stinking fish juice! It’s food grade and cheap, too.

Myself, I like the slicing angle of the Shun DM0743, but I’d want the handle to have finger grooves (measure to fit hand + neoprene gloves) and, the blade would need to be longer, proportionally thinner. For a handle, Pakkawood, Ebony? WOK might be able to say which is less likely to absorb odors and take the abuse. Saw, you may need more than one style! 😛
