I do not pretend to be a qualified Metal/Plastilurgist but common sense would tell me, that concern for longevity is moot. Given the low pressure/speed, involved at the actual bearing surfaces, and factored by multiple magazines, I would think you will go through several guns before you wear either type of mag out.
You make a great point Squirrelhawker. Is there anyone who has them both with at least a months millage on them that could give a review?

Ok, now that that’s confirmed by Ed himself. I guess you were right the first time Donny. Now, if your post depicts a true picture of the 2 different types It looks like the aluminum one shows lots of wear while the plastic one still looks pretty good. I plan on buying some extra mags for my new R3M standard in .25 cal. but from the looks of things i may want the plastic ones. From Tony’s post it seems like he has a batch of the aluminum ones for now. If that’s the case i will wait for the plastic ones to come in. Just saying 💡
It’s hard to tell how much wear there is on either mag. The black paint wears off the edges on the aluminum mag but that doesn’t mean the aluminum is wearing. Plus maybe the aluminum mag has just had more use, or possibly the plastic mag is brand new. Seems to me that the aluminum would have more longevity.
So how much for aluminum .22 and .25 mags?

The dimples near the center are used for the second/current version R3M; making the magazines this way makes the magazines compatible with both versions of the breeches that are out there.
Absolutely correct, plastic mags. .22 can be used for both old and new version of the breach.

Thanks Kiba, I was trying to figure out what the dimples do but didn’t notice anything that stood out in my breech. The mag indexing felt the same. Sorry Hoot wasn’t ignoring you, just needed to look into it more.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the dimples around the outside edge make them compatible with the first version of the R3M which used a slightly different system and index detent location compared to current rifles.

Again, correct me if I’m wrong. I remember seeing some early R3M pictures showing magazines with the indexing detent around the outer edges of the magazines but I can’t seem to find them now.
Regarding the origin of plastic mags, Ed made some mention of working on molds for plastic mags quite a while ago and hinted that delays with the molds was the reason for the long delay in shipping additional magazines to R3M owners. Perhaps he gave up on them and just stuck with aluminum?

Wearing a mag out was never an issue for me. If Ed designed it I’m sure both are built to last. I know I’m going to catch a lot of flak for saying this but here we go; one of the many reasons that drew me to the R3M is it’s beauty. If i can help it, and sometimes a can’t, I like to keep my guns looking new as long as possible. I’ve seen past post were the actual gun looks new but the mag look like its been around for years. Now, if the aluminum one works better, give that one. If they both work the same, give me the better looking one. Just my personal preference. :2cents: yours may differ :ugeekn:
