Talon SS 12 in. .177 @ 900 and .25 long barrel @ 900?
Is it possible to set up the same frame and bottle to shoot light .177 pellets through the baffles in a Talon SS at 900 fps and then change to a long barrel to shoot .25 pellets at the same 900 fps. Maybe shoot the .177 at a 2,000 psi fill through a restricted top hat and shoot the .25 wide open at a higher pressure. Which valve would be best? Is there enough wall thickness in a Condor top hat to to tap a DIY quick change restrictor into it? Or, can the Condor valve accept a different stem with more thickness in it to accept a restrictor?

Went out Sunday and got a little shooting done. Did not do full shot strings, it was still pretty cold and I just wanted to see where I was at. JSB Kings went around 850fps, Barracudas went about 800fps and Field Target Trophys at 930fps. This is plenty fast enough for me, the accuracy was excellent at the ranges I wanna shoot. When I do spend time doing whole shot strings with all the different pellets I’ve got I will start a new thread with that info. But for now the talon valve seems to have plenty of power, at least with a 24″ barrel, in .25 cal.
Yea I had seen a few posts that said that about just converting the talon valve, but I never found any list of what parts you would need. I did think about doing it that way, I think if I called airforce they would help me with what I needed. If I need to go high flow then I figured just get a tank and keep my stock tank to use with the .177 barrels I’ve got. I was just looking at Pyramyds site and it lists the velocity of the regular talon (18″) in .25 as 850fps, so I should be in pretty good shape even with the stock valve. Its supposed to warm up here the end of next week so hopefully I can get out and finally find out instead of searching and wondering :confusedn:
Someone said that parts for the valves are really cheap They built a whole high flow valve assembly from parts for $60 instead of the $100 that AirForce charges for the assembly. If the two large threaded sections are the same as the standard valve, the remaining high flow pieces may only be $30-40.
All the talons, the original 18″ and the SS have the standard air tank. All calibers have the same valve unlike the condor that has one valve return spring for .177 and another for .20 .22 and .25. I don’t think any airforce rifle comes with the micrometer tank, its just offered on its own. I did find a post here on the forum last night after posting here where a member said you can get around 800fps from talon valve with a 30 grain pellet in a 24″ .25 barrel. It was titled “Adding a .25 Cal Barrel to SS”. I will find out when I take mine out, I have a chronograph so I will post if thats really the case or not, but if it is true then I will buy a high flow tank so I can get a little more power than that if I need it.
Which valve do you have? I believe all of the new style Talons that shipped with a .177 barrel came with the micrometer valve which will really hold back a .25 pellet. I’m probably going to go with a paintball HPA tank regulted to 1,600 psi? to shoot light .177 at 850-900 fps and convert the stock bottle and valve to high flow into a .257 barrel.
I HAVE THE SAME SET UP, TALON SS 177, AND 18″. BARREL IN 25 CAL….I JUST GET ABOUT 650-675 WITH BARACUDAS AND 730 WITH JSB EXACTS….
I have had my .177 Talon SS for a little over a year now, I shot it stock for a while and liked it but wanted to tinker. I put on a 24″ .177 barrel and was able to get the same accuracy with only 2000 psi fill pressure, so I got more shooting from my tank. Now I am gonna go .25 because I like shooting at longer distances (75+) and the .177 pellets get pushed around too much by any small wind. I just put on my 24″ .25 cal barrel the other day, I am still otherwise stock Talon SS so I will just see what kind of velocity I can get by turning up the power wheel and adjusting air pressure, then see how it shoots. If I need more power then I will likely get a high flow bottle like you suggested and a hammer weight, to go to Condor power levels. I’m in Indiana and its COLD here so I’m gonna wait for better weather before I take it out and start playing with it. When I do I will post up what I find because in my searches here I also had trouble finding anyone who had shot .25 cal 24″ with stock Talon valve.
I just bought a Talon SS .177 so I will start with that. I was hoping to avoid it but I probably will have to end up with two different bottles.
I was successful with my Condor going from 24″ .22 to 12″ .177 but I was tuning the .177 for accurate low power and quiet.
If you do try it without changing to the .177 tank valve spring, you may get tank dumps.
For my tuned down .177 I came up with an idea to change the Condor hammer weight spring arrangement. It didn’t work without the Condor extra hammer weight so I installed that little weight to the muzzle end of the spring. That in effect brought the hammer weight down to what is used for .177 BUT increased the compression of the standard Spring.
Of course I used only around 1600 PSI but had it shooting very accurate and relitively quiet for 25-50 yards.

850 fps and 41 fpe with the Kings is perfect. I’m surprised more people with these AirForce airguns don’t spend $100 for a cheap chrony. It really makes it fun and lets you know what is happening. You can’t use the Chairgun simulation program without one.

Now if you can get a tune for the .177 that gives 860-870 fps you can really switch back and forth in a few minutes with the same scope sight tape and hold overs.
