Q:

O-ring behind tophat

O-ring size 7/16″ O.D.x 1/4″ I.D x 3/32″ #78 O-ring from Lowe’s plumbing dept.
When I put the o-ring behind the tophat on my condor it stopped doing three things.
1 – using to much air
2- trying to blow the end cap off
3- being to loud for backyard use

The sound of pellets striking the metal targets is much louder than the sound from my
condor ss. Thanks to the group for all the information.

Making it a sticky I would not recommend, the o ring will become sticky and deformed..

I did notice that my experiments with O rings are not in the topics referenced by me, they where in the Excell sheet, I can probably get it from another forum if I can get in my account..

Every tab on the sheet contains information about the modifications and then the shot string was pasted in via my home made Chrony comport cable, the es and SD and footpounds where automatically calculated..

I shot so many strings indoor with the cable running to my pc With so many setups I had to start documenting and automate the process..

Reply To: need some advice on filling

Some more info, please beware that my shot string is the one in the 950 fps range and with the low std deviation and extreme spread.. the excel sheet is gone I’m afraid..

O-rings and an 30 shot string sounds about right.. but with the longer condor barrel I would surely be able to push out 60 maybe 70 good shots with and very flat curve…

Btw simply removing the c clips got me 60 or 70 footpounds with 40 grain slugs which were way to hard to use in an airgun.. I would have taken first place on the next match too but I accidentally hit my card while sighting in for that day so I lost 11 points I think (having 11 holes in your card means you have to subtract your highest point shot… still got third place though..

Kind regards,

I’ve tried o-rings behind the top hat, it promotes inconsistencies. .

I tuned my 18 inch talon to 35 fpe by just changing from an talon tunes valvestem to the co2 valvestem and using c-clips to limit the travel..

I got 50 consistent shots and won the 100mairgun.nl competition with that setup in 2009 “benhrest” shooting with the standard long flexible bipod..

O rings lead to nothing.. lookup my posts from back then.. there are some shot strings and even an nice Excell sheet where you can see my progress on that gun…

IMHO It seems a bit of a shame that nobody took my very easy solution and made it even better..

Search all posts from my original username here (shootsafe) there are not many so it’s an short read..

The principle is just have an high flow valve and then restrict it’s travel.. doing this with an rubbery/springy material gets you no where you start introducing hammer bounce, and you need to remove the valvestem to make adjustments.. the c clips can be removed added without removing the valvestem, you can sand them down for fine tuning etc..

It sounds more like your factory top-hat was just very poorly adjusted and the o-ring is taking out some of the range. I tried full sequences of shots from 2850 to 1500 with several pellets, with and without o-ring and what I found is that the o-ring gives you a slightly larger (generally two shots for me) ‘sweet spot’ – in other words it’s a pretty small improvement – but that’s assuming you’ve got the basics dialed in – like tophat adjustment (easiest done with the Talon Tunes tophat).

My tophat came loose today and I want to get an oring behind it. I tried unscrewing this tophat by taking the 2 Allen screws out and the tophat won’t screw off because there is resistance at the end. Am I not supposed to screw it off?

Nevermind I found a video on this and it should be made into a sticky for newbs

I believe “powder burner” did the best job of promoting the o-ring behind the top hat :darth-vader:

There may be even more to the problems you mentioned though

Other than snugging up a loose screw or two, the next best thing is to get the TalonTunes Quick Change Top Hat.
It eliminates a lot of pesky problems that can bite you when you least expect it
