Q:

Interesting Data w/out a Chronograph

I am working backwards as I do not yet own a chronograph.

Preliminary tuning without a chrony has required me to shoot at 5 yards increments, carefully plotting my drop at each distance.

Then using ChairGun Pro, I inputted all my data (zero distance, scope height, sight base, pellet weight, etc.)

At this point I began to adjust my velocity on ChairGun Pro until the trajectory table matched the bullet drop that I just recorded.

I was pleasantly surprised to find an FPS that essentially matched my pellet drop almost perfectly!

At 600 FPS ChairGun Pro showed a trajectory virtually identical to my shots on paper from 10-50 yards at 5 yards increments.

Using JSB 18 grains, my approximate FBE comes out to 14.38.

Yesterday I smoked that raccoon @ 41 yards with a head shot, and today I wrecked a starling @ 20 yards with a chest shot.

Certainly my results are not as fine as someone using a chrony, but I am confident my results are very accurate using this “working backwards” method.

14 to 15 FBE is most certainly enough to take A LOT of game and this did surprise me as the carnage was excellent. I have lowered my Condor this low so I can shoot quietly with many many shots per fill.

Just thought I’d share some of these cool numbers with everyone here! Regardless of what the naysayers might say, a well placed shot at minimal energy output is more than enough! 🙂 Just ask the raccoon in the last post!

Cheers!

Papa Schultz,

I did as you advised! It worked out rather well I must say. I did all this in an hours time one evening after work. Once some more lead gets in and I have a full day I will really get more dialed in with this method and see just how far I can take it. Thanks for the advice :8:
