Q:

Maintenance on my .25

Hey Gang,

After a year of use I finally decided to check my O-rings and regulator in my .25. I have maybe 1500 shots out of her, so I figured it was time. She shoots CP’s and JSB’s very well at around 920 fps from 200 to 120 bar then falls off the reg and gets a bit louder. :suprisedn: I have been tracking some session over my Chony in a notebook to see if things deviate much – so far nothing serious, a few flyers here and there but mainly she hits what I point at. The critters around here are wary! 😈

There is a breakdown video Ernest has online which was a great help but I had troubles getting the action off the airtube and barrel. His video states it should wiggle off easily. On mine that thing was tight, very very tight .. I had to use some plastic upholstery tools to finesse it off with some light tapping. I didn’t want to mar the action or the airtube using anything metal. When I got to the firing pin I noticed it was a bit loose – barely touching. In the breakout schematic I also see that there is a item 8-24x3mm O-ring before the pre chamber spacer. Mine had none.

When I went to use Ernests’ trick of threading a cleaning rod to the regulator end to pull it out, it would not budge. I spayed a bit of silicon on that end and tried it again and it still would not budge. I resorted to taking off the fill probe end, and since I already had a long piece of PVC for some work I did to my Marauder, placed that in the gauge end and pushed a bit even a bit harder. It still would not budge, so now I’m thinking WTF..? Using a strong light down the gauge end it looked a bit corroded, so I sprayed some silicon down there and swirled it around a bit. This time when I pushed with the PVC it came loose. There was nothing I could do to get that bugger to move from the breech end.

So now that my baby is all apart I already know I’m going to change all the O-rings and sand down the interior threads on the regulator and gauge ends. Is there anything else I need to look out for. I’m really worried why the action did not come out as easily as Ernest posted. I don’t want to put it back and go through hell trying to get it out.

My other plans are to at least clean the airtube so the reg doesn’t get stuck like that again. Wha’s a good solution for that? I already measured the reg height so I know what stock is for her, she’s 53.17. I also want to check the washers in the reg to make sure they are not gunky. This will be my first full maintenance so I don’t want to have to do this again for a while. So far she has been exceptional – the maintenance, from what I see if probably due. I also found out I have a metal firing pin from all this hard work. 😎 Previously I had no clue about that.

Any thoughts from the group on any obvious do’s or don’ts? 😯

Cheers

Thanks GKU and Chad I appreciate the follow up –

Yes my reading was low for the reg height – I rechecked and it was 53.88mm – actually checked it a few times over different parts of the body then just used the tip top – mine has a point and read the 53.88mm. The firing valve was loose and barely touching. I figured that out when it rattled a bit after I got it out the airtube. It may have backed out but seemed pretty tight where it was before I checked it. I’ll ding a thread when placing it back to make sure it does not back out. Overall the shot consistency before the disassembly was pretty solid before coming off reg – I did notice the first shot was always lower after it sat for a day or so.

I did hand pump for the first month of ownership but added a desiccant filter to the pump after doing more reading, since then it has only been fed HPA from my Tiger Tank. I’ll clean it out and keep an eye on it. The original factory o-rings are crap – they look like square blocks – I have replacements from Ernest so that is my first task. I’ve also gone into the action to see if I can lube and/or polish any parts. I’m leaving the trigger pins alone – the setup is fine. The mag index is a bit rough and the side lever action is really gritty when you actually pull it off the barrel/airtube and use it. I’ll want to lube that to try and smooth it out. It feels like traveling on a gravel road with a new set of wheels. 😯

When I pull the reg there was this purplish grease on top. I figured this was some form of lock tight or something. Perhaps that is what was lockign the reg in the tube :confusedn: .

I just saw that diagram about the O-ring again – they really should have put that between items 3 and 4, unless I have an old breakout sheet. 👿 Thanks for confirming that – I thought it odd something would be missing.

Thanks again for all the tips – I’m having fun taking her apart – no rush to get it back together. I have a few more guns to play with and want this back as close to pre-disassembly before doing any other changes. Besides I have a .22 coming soon and want to make sure I know what to do in case it needs a service. I want to shoot that for a year and then see what she looks like inside.

My thoughts are to hoot the heck out of it, make trigger, pellet and air adjustments to see what it can do then after a ton of pellets through it document your setting and dig into it for any unseen issues, namely o-rings, corrosion and/or loose parts.

Great feedback!!!

Wow, I did not have a hard time at all with both of my Crickets as you did.

I’d use quality O-rings a lube and you should be good to go.
Keep your fill air free of moisture, may seem to be the cause of some corrosion and lock ups your having ?

Also,

That O-ring slips/goes on over part #3 end plug body firing valve, not between per charge spacer.

Not sure what you meant buy, “the firing pin I noticed it was a bit loose – barely touching” ?
I’d check your valve spring retainer to see if it back out and became loose ?

I dont get to shoot a lot but here is the thread that shows what I did. Also 53.17 seems a little short to be getting optimal speed. Check your length again.

Polish the reg washers helps with constancy.
