Q:

Rifling types, brands, and accuracy

There’s been some open and back door discussions this past month as to which barrel brands and types are most accurate.

The FX smooth twist seems to be very polarizing in this regard. Lothar Walther also seems to spark some debate as well. While you never hear negative comments on CZ.

The only two brands fitted to a gun I’ve owned are LW & CZ. I’m pretty biased towards the CZ’s.

So what are the opinions of those of you that have owned all three brands?

How do Smooth Twist barrels preform out to 100 yards and beyond?

Is there a difference in LW barrels made in Europe and those made in Georgia? Or do both facilities make poor runs?

Are darn near all CZ tubes good to excellent out of the box with less fouling issues?

Are the old BSA barrels really up to the hype?

Will hoot ever get another erection without the help of modern medicine?

Will the leyla’s ever arrive so I can have something to do besides start threads about nothing and post girly pics?

Indeed, wait for the Greece to exit Euro and you can have all that in fair price. Bearded girls and quality guns made outside of EU  What do you need a custom “barrel” for?

It is pathetic that high quality barrels have to be polished to shoot straight. Some tooling marks, etc. Are you serious that after that you call CZ a good company?

I think that USA receives better products than some countries from Europe. It is known that the companies send the highest quality products to strategic markets whereas the rest recives just some junk.

The barrel shot very well before I polished it. Polishing just made it that much better! CZ barrels are the shit my friend, perfect?, no but it’s as close to perfect as you’ll get without going with custom barrels.

Rumor has it the USA does get the better goods. Mainly due to the fact that we refrain from participating in Western European games such as soggy crumpet, lad cricket, poke the bloke, drill bill on strawberry hill, and the German Classic shitzen-klopin.

The two I have are excellent shooters. The air arms brand .22 in the pic had one tooling mark in the lands near the choke. It outshot two s500’s even with a slight imperfection. The tube also had minor surface rust on the exterior out of the box.i knew the inside of the bore would as well, so I removed the barrel polished it with 200 patches coated with jb bore paste, soaked a bore mop in Kano kroil, allowed it to soak for a few hours, ran 7 dry patches through the bore, then I ran 100 patches coated with JB bore bright, ran the mop with kroil through again, allowed it to soak for a hour, ran 15 dry patches through, removed excess oil from the TP. Reinstalled the barrel and haven’t cleaned since.

Your the only person I’ve heard complain about a cz barrel so maybe you guys got a bad lot. Those mandrels go bad sometimes, QC supervisors get tanked occasionally and forget to check shit leaving the plant. The guy running the mandrel might have just found out he knock his cousin up and was freaking out because he knew his sister/wife would find out????

:2cents:

Leadbetter, are you kidding me? CZ has some serious problems with quality in airgun barrels. We received multiple Crickets with harsh area in the choke. I also saw a couple more in Taipans and every single barrel was damaged. If the bore does not look right I even do not want to test it.

Cz are aso legendary well before crickets ect the s200 /cz200 boys have made a great reputation for them on the hft

Yes they are ! By far my favorite rifles I’ve bought so far and have outshot guns I paid double for.

Old time BSA are legendary in .22

Lw are also of good reputation only real gripe is tight chokes on some of them easily solved

Hw although cheap tend to have a good following also but not in high power

Number for number tho when u think how many brands out there use lw quality is obviously high all the big brands use lw daystate Theoben air arms edgun .25 and higher crickets as with all barrels u get good and bad. BSA quality has dropped hell of a lot scince gamo taken over and production moved to spain but if u get chance of a. Old BSA barrel true hammer forged in .22 snap it up it will shoot 99% of pellets at pinpoint accuracy

I’ve heard stories about the lonestar .25’s kicking ass at 100 meters in Europe ! I’ve lusted for one for some time now.

There seems to be some high end American barrels popping up on some winning guns. Lilja list a .177, krieger offers dan brown spec tubes in .22 and
.25, and bartlien offers a .300 bore cut rifled barrel as well.

Why those aren’t offered on $3000 guns, I don’t know?

BSA barrels are indeed up to hype. If you look at Dutch 100M competition results there are always a couple of BSAs on top ten. They are also a popular replacement for LW barrels among the FT shooters in UK. In .177 some of BSA barrels are really pellet picky and I do own one .22 barrel that only works well with 5.55 size pellets. There’s also a rumor that those mandrels they use to make their barrels are quite worn and Gamo don’t give them extra money to replace them.

CZ barrels are also hammer forged and seem to be doing rather well. I wouldn’t have any problems buying one if I needed a new barrel. Not used in many airguns so that may explain the number of comments.

LW is a bit more hit and miss as far as ultimate accuracy goes. They are good but not always superb in accuracy. Many airgun manufacturers use them and they can usually provide 1/2″ groups at 50 yards.

ST is a bit of a question mark, especially in .177. Some comments have been very negative and it seems that in .177 they are struggling to match LW barrels in accuracy. They are cheap to make though and that may be one of the reasons why FX adopted them. I’ve seen some good groups from .30 barrels at 100M though.
