Q:

Capabilities of .25 valve for new 33.95gr JSB Heavies

With the availability of the new .25 33.95gr JSB Heavies comes some questions regarding the capabilities and durability of the .25 regulator.

I’ve been running both my .25 R3 Longs at 915fps / 47.5 ft-lb for quite a while and haven’t had a single issue with the regulator or valve stems. Accuracy and velocity consistency is excellent.

I’m considering picking up a tin or two of the new 33.95gr Heavies to try; seems the BC is about .053 which is a substantial improvement over the .035 of the current 25.4gr JSBs. Keeping them at the same 47.5ft-lb of energy would be about 792fps. However, if I bumped them up to 875 fps or so that would be about 58 ft-lbs of energy. Obviously I’d set up the velocity to where things are most accurate but I’d like around 850-900fps to be a “target” for velocity provided the accuracy is there.

Does anyone have any experience with how the .25 valve and regulator fare at that ~58 ft-lb energy level? I’m sure one of Ernest’s metal valve stems would be a good idea, but other than that I don’t have any clue how the .25 regulator will function at that energy level. Are the transfer ports between sections of the regulator up to the task, is the current belleville washer stack acceptable at that energy level, etc? Would I be better served ordering a .30 regulator assembly as I recall Ed did make some changes to the regulator to cope with the higher muzzle energy of the .30 rifles? Experience and input would be appreciated!

Unless ED has made changes to the end of the air valve/regulator assembly, the improved air valve rod MIGHT work in the older assembly.

My dear your Goatship…

Provided you can get a air valve rod for the .30 cal, I would wager it could be milled to fit. Length and width perhaps? For all we know the entire valve might fit in the .25! Now, that would be an improvement worth paying for!!!!

Here’s the Goat breaking a sweat after work….

Thanks for the information OG. I have a tin of the heavies and I plan on testing then this weekend. I have tested a few just shooting them for function and they feel hard to push into the chamber. I think the thick skirt and the EDgun may not be a good match but I’ll post my BC group and FPS after Saturday.

Sorry that it has taken me a couple of days to post.

I don’t post much anymore as I feel that just about all of this Edgun stuff has been covered many times in the past, plus: I only get on the TAG after I have left the bar after I get off of my 2nd shift job.

OK.

Many years ago: Mamcrakin and I petitioned Ed to make a 25 caliber version of his 22 caliber R 2.5.

Ed listened to us and he sent us both a 25 cal R 2.5 long. We didn’t get a free gun; we had to pay for it!. ED got tired of the constant emails and PMs that Jeff and I were sending him!

Being that I live in central Illinois, I got mine a couple of days sooner than Texan (Jeff) Mamcrakin got his.

Both of our guns were set up to shoot the JSB 25.4 grain pellets. They both shot the 25.4 grain JSBs at around 1050 fps.

We both had to turn the reg and HST down a LOT to get in the 880-890 range.

So: Yes, I think that a standard 25 cal R3 long could easily be turned up to shoot the 34 grain heavy kings at 880 fps. You might want to order a couple of extra air valve rods from Tony.

I have a 30 cal R3, the air valve/regulator assembly won’t work in a 25 cal R3. The front end of the regulator has a smaller OD and it won’t seal in the R3 25 cal air tube. The air tube of the 30 cal has a smaller ID and it is rated for a 3750psi fill.

Ed has posted that he has come out with a heavier air valve rod for the 30 cal. I wonder if it will work in the 25 cal? Unless ED has made changes to the end of the air valve/regulator assembly, the improved air valve rod MIGHT work in the older assembly.

Yarrah (Harry) just posted on the Yellow that his FX Elite shot the JSB Kings at 900 fps and that it shoots the Heavy Kings at 780 fps.

That is only a 120 fps difference and I know that my 25 cal R3 Matador can be turned up to 880-890 fps with the 34 grain JSBs. I do have 4 extra air valve rods in stock: just in case.

I’m down to 7 tins of 25.4 grain pellets and I need to order some more. I’m going to order some of the heavies and see how they shoot.

If they prove out well, I will order plenty more. I like to shoot things at 150-200 yards and the higher BC of the heavies would come in handy.

Hello, I would like to share the reply from Eduard when I asked him for similar question.

My question
Is .25 Matador capable of shooting new 34grain .25cal pellet at 950ft/s?

Reply fro Eduard
You will need to drill the transfer port from the back plug to the
breech, to have more air to come, but if you do it JSB King will not
be used for this guns any more, as they will be too short to pass the
bigger whole properly.

Well, I am also very interested in trying new pellet. Where can I get them?
