Q:

Regulator-time between shots.

I just got some .25 JSB heavies from TT and wanted to shoot them over my chronograph to see what my rifle would shoot them at.
Currently it is shooting the 25.4’s at 960 FPS.
My first shot with the 33.95 heavies recorded 883 fps. Subsequent shots were all in the 825 fps. range. I shot pretty quickly between shots and thought perhaps the first shot a bad reading.
Reloaded the magazine and my first shot was 878fps. and then back to 820 range. If I waited about 30-40 seconds between shots I would be back at 880 fps.
I didn’t actually time it as it was between rain showers and I was in a hurry. Ended up taking down the chronograph in the rain.
Seems like a quick second shot will be in the 825 range and if I want the full 880 fps I will have to pause between shots. Once I waited a bit but not too long and got 850 fps.
Wait for a good pause and I get the full 880 fps.
I did not notice this with the 25.4’s as the first shot seemed in line with subsequent shots.
Is this reg issue or just the way it is when wanting to push the heavy pellets at max velocity?
Particularly would like to hear from Earnest.

That were the older types. Quite a few changes were made since then. Here’s a quote from the owner

Humas states their reg. takes up to 15 seconds to even out.
Just saying.

Quite a lot for regulator. Did you try open and clean or check your stock regulator? I can not believe the stock regulator could be so bad.

They use belleville washers. And depending on make or model run around €80

Do they employ Belleville spring washers or a main spring ?
Interesting, how much are they going for ?

Here’s a comparison shot string between stock and aftermarket.

When disassembleing the regulator mark the adjuster position in regards to the body and measure total length. That way when you reassemble, you can get almost spot on back on pressure.

if your still not satisfied with the original regulator performance you might try an aftermarket reg. I know of several people that swapped them and were quite pleased with the results.

It would be good if some one else with a Cricket 25 cal that also used the new heavies chime in with there results also.

I’d also would check the valve spring retainer settings first.
If it’s at 2 turns after contact you could set it between 1/2-1 turn.
That will/should increase your fps and give you a bit more hammer spring to play with.

The 2 small O-ring inside of the reg don’t have to actually leak for them to go/be bad.
Poor quality harden out OEM ones in conjunction with the funky lube can play havoc with the shot consistency.

Also don’t use Molykote 55 on the inside of the reg, use supper lube only.
When reinstall place the breather hole on the reg face it upwards.

FVA, be sure and get some very accurate pre-disassembly measurements. When taking the OAL even note where your calipers are resting on the square adjustment screw. Mine wasn’t flat but had a tit dead center that could add a few thousand’s. Other than that its pretty easy.

Sounds like I should pull my reg. and clean it.
Never done that before but have watched Earnest’s vids and looks well within my capabilities.
Thinking I might want to replace any O-rings I come across with higher quality ones while I am there.

Agreed, although the last bar might sometimes take a bit longer(2-3 sec). But 99% of shutoff pressuere should be reached in about a second.

Regulator discs/internal needs cleaning, a friend of mine tweaked my gun where as it took 25-30 seconds for it to recover pressure between shots.

Your right mentioning the equilibrium. It’s a balance between pressure pellet weight hammer weight and hst. Not taking the reg into account this equilibrium will give different speeds depending on pressure. Ie the bellcurve which as I see it is more like a characteristic of the setup.. Now you want yo be somewhere close to the end of the bell with your reg pressure as not to be too wasting air and have little speed difference with a bit of pressure difference. And you want ample pressure difference between fill pressure and reg pressure. So to get as many shots.

Now looking at the post. He mentions that while the rifle sits and pressure increases a little his velocitt rises quite a bit.
This tohether with a mediocre speed to begin with. (I try to keep the pellets at 900ft./s) lets me to believe his reg pressure is a bit on the low side.
