.257 Testing/New Dyotat Valve

Hi All,

Have posted this on GTA too.Received my NEW 4350 psi CF tank couple weeks ago. I will include a pic of gun with new tank as didn’t have camera today. It looks better on stock than EVANIX one IMO…….Last week also received the newest Dyotat Valve…Doug told me he used a LIGHTER return spring in this valve…Compared to what his other one does, I couldn’t tell any difference and it performed very well…….

I shot last Friday testing at the 220 yd range with differing pressures and also tried again Bob’s BBT 79 Gr BT that hadn’t worked well for me before, but at around 3200 PSI. As pure lead the BBT cast at 81 gr and I lately have gone to 5% tin mix and they now cast at 79 gr.

First pic is at 220 yds with the BBT 79 gr…..Speed was 1065 fps average….With Mirage UP was hard to see the shots forming in lower right corner, Fine as i see the black ones fine but hard when they mark as white…. The fired 6 shots were 1.7″ at 220 yds. Better than MOA…….3500 psi…ALL I SHOT of it as it was working well….. I tried 4000 psi and was over 1100 fps but i fired 3-4 shots and was all over so stopped…..

Went to the Lyman 71 gr FN and they always on balance shoot the best for me…2nd Pic was 1.4″ at 220 yds, 3400-3450 psi and try to keep around 1080 fps……Wind is blowing good so when i raise psi or change bullets, bothers me not if not in center, as I want to see how it groups.. I can always bring it to center with scope. I change bullets and weights and pressure so if it is ON THE TARGET i move scope little, just use different MIL DOT….. Some groups i get lucky as first time is centered well!! If shooting one bullet i center the scope, naturally ;D

Today i went at 100 yds to see if i could better the Hunter Supply 87 gr fn i bought when i was gathering bullets to TRY, before I started casting. I resized down to .2570 and they seemed some better…..3rd pic was a bunch at 3200 psi and 1000 fps…. Blacked out top and low holes are when i switch bullet weights or pressures i need a couple shots to see WHICH MIL DOT to aim with, then start shooting……..

4th pic down is same bullet but at 3800 psi and up to 1080 fps….7th shot was up and away but the other 6 were decent? Still 100 yds………I boosted to 4000 psi and first 2 were a hole and a half and i go WOW, then the next 2 were 3″ to the right and UP so knew that wasn’t working….

Then went to my best working in my gun more consistently, the Lyman 71 fn….5th pic is only 3 shot group but very good .293″…. I am yelling at my 2 buddies and they come to look and i say NOT GOING TO MESS IT UP!!! My friend says no don’t mess it up, start again on another target….My red aim stickers are 1″ pasters………after all the talking wind had switched again and blew the next 4 to the left of aim point… Didn’t compensate, just wanted to see if group again. The first 3 were almost the same as the first 3 i was happy with, and 4th made group a tad larger this is the 6th pic…….I quit and watched my friend as his reloading and some tricks has his AR-15 doing pretty well and he was happy, and other friend shot his 6BR…….I let him shoot a couple 5 shot groups with AIR and before we ate lunch his were 1″ so gun and bullets were working fine with gusty winds.

Going again to re-shoot the Highpower 300 yd target and at that distance. If it is better than my first attempt posted in another thread, i will go to the 600 yd line and try the HighPower 600 yd target center?…………..Probably a week or so to reserve that range?

As with all my posts i test a LOT OF BULLETS, and differing pressures….What i post are the good ones that work for me. Rest i discard but informational……Thanks for looking.

Hey Carl,
Thanks for the good work, sharing and keeping us all posted with what you are doing… I certainly enjoy hearing about your progress and all the hard data you have already contributed.
It’s very interesting that the “BBTB” has actually turned out to be rather unimpressive. Your findings just adds more creedance to the all around goodness of that old Ideal/Lyman #257420 bullet design. It seems to be a difficult all around design to beat….
In my opinion and limited trigger experience,,,,, There is indeed another bullet design that is very worthwhile!
It is an 88gr Spitzer. However it isn’t any of the same 88gr Spitzers manufactured today, such as the RCBS or NOE offerings.
The mojo bullet I am speaking of is produced from an old antique and long discontinued mould that was once manufactured by the original “Ideal” company. The same folks that originated our friend the #257420 bullet!
The only place I have sourced these bullets from is ” RJ’S ACCURATE BIGBORE BULLETS ”
I dont know if you have tried them, but I highely reccomend them. Unfortunately I dont know the bullet model number. I think RJ kinda has been a little protective about revealing too much info, but he did reluctantly reveal that it was an original and somewhat rare antique Ideal mould that he uses for these bullets.
I am down to my last precious few and need to get around to placing an order for more. Just not in my most Immediate budget for now. Once I do an order, I’d like to pass a few along to you and see how they work for you. I would need to make sure that they are sized right for your bore though.
I think that Tofazfou might also have this mould too, or at least is familiar with its specifics. I seem to recall that he had favorable results too. I believe he used them in his Soda Pop can video.
I like them alot. I have found a very noticable improvement in group size @ 100 yrds over the Lyman .
My only critical observation is the obvious but expected greater trajectory that these heavier/slower bullets travel along their journey to P.O.I. ( but that is just the nature of precision long distant shooting, especially airguns!). There is a positive tradeoff too ….. The spitzer has a better all around B.C.
The Spitzer is noticeably more predictable in crosswind performance at a distance.
There also is a popular 100gr mould that a few guys use too. I havent really enjoyed any of the 100 grainers i have sampled.
I got a sample of Knifemakers 54gr short decked NOE bullets I have yet to try too. I have heard good things and bugged knife to cast some up for me. Now if I can only remember where I misplaced them!

.

The 79 gr BBT is actually a good bullet……I just have never shot a smaller group with it VS. the Lyman….My earlier efforts were not good shooting it….Bumping up the speed for me and is working better….Around 1065 fps…at over 1100 fps groups were much larger and also in the 950 fps range…I will be shooting this coming week at some steel at the 400 and 500 meter Silhouette Range and will give it a good try there….Will be 106 degrees …….nice day for testing and is 70 miles from home….The BBT 63 is a good bullet too, and will try it too……..Haven’t shot further with it than 400 yds and just rocks……

I haven’t shot anything over 88 gr and won’t, as to heavy for the caliber for WAY OUT there with a 1-14″ twist, IMO! The 88 gr Spitzers of which you are fond of, Yes i have tried them from where you got yours as i read how Cedric said they worked for him…..For me and my rifle they did not work well at all…I shot a few early on and were big groups at 100 yds at 3200 psi…..I had purchased bag of 100 to try……Left on the shelf till i got my gun working much better..Tried them again a week ago when at the 220 yd range and have bullets that work great……..Only shot just a few at the 3500 psi level this time where my other heavy bullets worked best, but the group was forming from left to right spread on the target and WASN’T wind!!.Wasted no more air with them….i switched to another bullet and actually yesterday i cast some more BBT 79 gr and i threw the bag of 88 Spitzers in the melt……..SO thanks for your kind offer but I tried them…Actually was HOPING they would be good as the higher BC would be an asset….. I have 5 sizing dies so can make to my rifles slug size, over or under if wanted…….I get die a tad undersized and hone to the size i want….. $25 each from Doughty and a good deal…..

I shot some of Dyotat’s bullets he gave me from the NOE mold he had decked ……both the 71 fn and the 67 hp….Both good bullets but for me the were not better than the LYMAN but about as good for the couple groups fired……..I may just buy that mold in the i believe 80 gr ??? Doug was going to send a few of them without the decked mold to see if they worked for me………This was a week or so ago and he has been working nights…….

Thanks for your input……..If i have anything GOOD to report mid week on steel, i will…The key word here is GOOD 😎 Wind supposed to be about 6-8 mph…..500 METERS is 547 yards and little SLOW bullets have a LOT OF DRIFT 🙄

Carl

That much power with that accuracy at those ranges is awesome. Good shooting and work on the gun.

Thanks!

Show use the gun and tank please… More interested in the tank. Where did you get it?

This thread shows a pic of the purpose built bench gun. http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=32551 This has an EVANIX tank on it…..3650 working pressure…..New one is this length to the end of the nipple at end……..it is a Carbon Fiber Wrapped at a working pressure of 4350 psi……I haven’t taken any pics of the new tank or on gun either……….Tank is straight from CHINA and 500 cc…Knowing what i know now, and shooting at pressure of 4000 psi testing, the most accurate .257 slugs for me shoot at 1075 fps and i can reach that with 3450 psi and really not necessary for any more pressure and 3200 psi is good too……HIGH PRESSURE Wastes a LOT OF AIR and accuracy turns bad with to much speed……In my rifle anyway………Just like powder………Reloading and when you pass the best accuracy node and go to fast accuracy falls way off after more powder…… YMMV…………..Carl

Nice 220 yard shots!

Thank You but i have done better on my first try at 220 yard rail….. First group is 1.1″ at 220 yds….Forgot the 2nd but it was centered in target and pretty good too! Both with the Lyman 72 gr fn and pure lead…………….Carl

Nice 220 yard shots!
