Q:

.30 cal Matador valve stem

I was shooting my 30 cal Matador Long today. It’s set up to shoot the JSB 44,7 gr pellet at 870 fps. I am the original owner and have shot approximately 1900 rounds since receiving it in that first 30 cal shipment. I know that the original 30 cal owners were experiencing valve stem failure between 500 – 1000 shots. I took 2 shots today and on the 3rd shot it did not fire and all I heard was hammer spring. I pulled the cocking handle back and it dumped the entire air cylinder. It’s what I would expect if the valve stem failed. Does this sound about right to those of you that have experienced valve stem failure. As I follow the forum I believe Secoda is the only original owner with out valve stem failure. Secoda if you read this thread please chime in and let me know if your 30 cal original valve stem is still going strong and number of shots you have put through it. Old Goats advice was to stock up on these 30 cal valve stems and fortunately I have 2 in stock and will dig into it tomorrow and sort it out. Did Ed ever address the issues with the 30 cal valve stems?

Just saw that topic. No problem to send new valve, just give me full address, name and phone number to PM.

Hi Ed, I also just PM’ed you regarding the broken valve stem on my 30 Long.

Ed, I have also sent you a PM. Please keep me posted. Thanks for the consideration. 😀

PM’d you.

Thanks SECoda

I don’t think Ed is creating anything for the 1st gen R30s and I have inquired 2 or 3 times. It seems those of us that lowered the fps to 875 (75 fpe) or lower have minimized or eliminated the issue. That greatly reduces the hammer slap on the stem.I have 2700 shots on the first stem so far which seems acceptable but a few spares if I need them. I know some have them set at 850 for the same. For the short gun and barrel length, low weight, quietness, accuracy and power, I am very satisfied with mine.

Earnest – do you know of any other alternatives that work?

I’ve been MIA for a few months so haven’t kept up with things. I also have an orignal .30 cal, and was wondering if these upgrade parts ever came in?

thanks

I got one of the first 30 cal R3 longs that came to the US. Ed sent 15 standards and 15 longs. As I got the gun from Ed; my 30 cal reg was marked 150 bars.

I bought my 30 cal long with the intensions of making it into a .257″ cal gun shooting my cast bullets. I bought a new 25 cal breech block assembly from Ed and mounted them on my 30 cal R3.

I currently have a 28″ long TJ’s barrel mounted on my .257 cal R3. I maxed out my HST and turned my reg up to 160 bar. I knew that the stock air valve rod wouldn’t last very long as it was originally designed for the original 22 cal Matador.

I have 5 extra air valve rods an hand.

I ordered 3 of the Ernest Matador air valve rods and they all came apart after 5-10 shots!

Ernest told me that his air valve rods are designed for 130 bar-NOT the stock 150 bar on the 30 cals! So: I am SOL on the broken Ernest air valve rods!

My 30 cal/.257″ project has been on hold.

Ed has posted that he has made some improvements on the new 30 cals and he said that the improvements would be available for sale to the ones that bought the first version.

Basically a new solid air valve rod, improved transfer port area thru the front end of the air valve/moderator assembly, air valve transfer port and front breech block, a heavier hammer and an improved moderator.

I’ve had my order in since Ed posted that.

Shooter3, I have 2 metal valve stems that I bought from Ernest. Ernest made them all metal with a stronger spring I thnk. I wonder if any of Ed’s new upgrades are transferable to the original 30 cal Edgun? Thanks for the info shooter3.

In the newest batch of Matadors .30 the valve stem is metal together with a heavier hammer.
