hi roachcreek

i do not have any access to firearms barrel where where i live. so i will have to make do with anything we’ve got here. all has to run in airgun barrel sadly. watching what you guys can do with airgun what really inspired me.

ive tried making several basic moulds in .22 and .25. for me this is more like for experimental purpose for my hobby and for personal use.

hi rrdstarr

these here just half of my experiment with i believe jerry’s slug on the left as a guide

this is one of the latest experiment. its a .22 29grainer

and heres the result at 40m with the .22 above. shot out of local made air rifle which done all wrong. rough chamber, rough loading pin, cheap quality barrel etc. im yet to find someone with a better .22.

this one is a .25 74grainer. 3 shots group, 60m. design of slug is somewhat similar to jerry’s slug. i think i still got a wrong diameter. i think it measured at .254-6. a bitch to load.

one big defect that i still have on each one is that the bullet is not perfectly circle. the closest variation if i measure the diameter and twist 90deg and measure it again is .002. i suspect this will give somewhat spiraling flight?

very limited working station (with kitchen equipments too 😆 , perhaps gordon ramsey could cast them better) and nowhere to test out pass 90m=(. the only place i could safely test out to 200m is hours away. maybe if i could find bullets that im happy with… maybe

again, i will not sell them and not allowed to. these all just for stretching my hobby and to see what i can do. i have no intention to copy and make advantage out of it.

Actually members of this forum were on the fore front of cast bullets in air guns 2 to 3 years ago. Tofasfou has a cast bullet guide in the other guns section. Dyotat, Tofasfou and myself made the longest shots in airgun history with 257 bullets.

Bottom line is ;you need a firearms barrel not air gun barrel and your bullets need to be as close to groove diameter as possible, and never under.

Sorry for the errors, I am still blind as a bat.

Two things come to mind; the TAG really has all you need if you just search it, and the second thing is that sadly,
too soon we forget and have to reinvent the wheel.

Do you have samples, up close, of your bullets?
One trick I learned recently is to heat your mould on the top of the pot or in it. The air rifle bullets are so small that the mould needs heated up to get a better casting. I used to cast big bullets so keeping the heat in the mould wasn’t such a big issue.

thanks guys. sorry for the slow response. been super busy with work

anyway im casting for .25. and im trying to use a standard LW barrel. i use a simple pot to melt the pure lead and just pour into home-made mold. still experimenting with sizes etc. if its super tight to push in, will it damage the rifling? ta

kinoko,
I’ve been trying to learn casting myself. I’ve posted in “Off Topic”.
There are several GOOD GUYS that have been answering my many questions there.
Maybe it’s my age but the learning has been difficult with no one here looking over my shoulder and correcting my mistakes.
Some of the suggestions have come as a result of me posting pictures.

What caliber are you casting ❓ are you dipping lead or have a bottom pour lead pot ❓ the process is slow unless you have multiple molds to alternate.
Pure lead seems to be at least good enough. Some are using 1 to 3% TIN. The TIN can help fill out the mold if needed but problems are more often corrected with correct temperatureS of Lead Pot AND the mols Temperature. Atimony is a hardener and not usually used in airgun pellets, slugs, or bullets as far as I know. The Tin does lower the bullet weight but may not be necessary.

The only thing I do different for airguns is use pure lead! Keep the antimony under 3%.
What calibre are you wanting to cast for?

There are others out there! Those are the ones off the top of my head!
Rsterne has several moulds he has created. He is on this forum and a few others!
