Q:

Talon .25 caliber

I was considering changing calipers, from .177 to .25. If you have a Talon in .25, what do you think of it? Do you have a 18 or 24 inch barrel? Have you made modifications to the Talon?

Any info will be appreciated.

Ratso…I find it very amusing seeing a genuine bastard, offering to sell an elderly bastard, a bastard caliber Lelya.

Strange how those things fit together sometimes!

Hoot: what the hell s wrong with u? I have a .20 caliber Leyla you want to buy it?

:hoot:

That’s a great idea!

That old idiom of how much is gained by using a longer barrel has been tossed around too long with anecdotal (personal experience), undocumented, evidence. It’s about time we got some solid numbers to work with.

Personally I’m interested regarding both the “TT” and “Extreme” top hats adding fps to the short 12″ barreled Talons. These are the only two tophats I’m aware of that suggest a possible increase in fps over even the OEM TalonP tophat.

Hoot:

FWIW, my experience with changing ONLY the barrel in length and NOT the caliber is about 10 FPS per inch of barrel increase/decrease, not changing any thing else. (i.e. power wheel setting, top hat gap, etc.)
I’m sure others’ mileage will vary some.

The beauty of the AF platform is you can change the power required/desired to shoot the full spectrum of weights of all calibers of virtually all ammo. the question you have to ask yourself is which has priority? Shot count or power?

Both cannot be maximized with all things being equal. At least I”ve never been able to achieve a seventy five – 100FPE shots on a single fill

I do not consider myself a “tuner” although I have shot more pellets across a chrony than at my prey. 😉 .

As an example, my Talon (all AF parts) with an .22 caliber 18″ barrel launches JSB 18.1 at 835fps and gives me a solid 40 shots with a SD of less than 10. More than enough shots for a days’ hunt and power to do it with. And at that speed, the pellet is stable in flight and has the energy to take small game at a distance that I”m capable of shooting.

I’m hoping to purchase an 18″ .25 barrel soon and I plan on putting it in a Condor that I have which is currently equipped with a 24″ barrel. I am wanting to change it for several reasons one of which is with the 24″ it’s a bit too wielding to carry in the brush. I’ve toyed with the idea of testing it with my Talon tank to do a comparison with some equality.

Sounds like another video review is in order 😎

Interesting point.

Plus, supersonic and pcp don’t always equate to repeatable accuracy…barring the use of projectiles designed for that speed. Not many people selling Sierra Boat-tailed, swagged lead slugs these days, in the calibers we use. Lots of variables when you start pushing the upper limits of pcp performance. That max performance has not been reached, but it will be expensive to get there, and even more expensive to stay there!

I think it would be a LOT smarter to simply pick up a .17 caliber WSM rifle ( http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2013/01/winchesters-new-3000-fps-17-win-super-mag-rimfire/ ) and be done with it. That is some serious rimfire performance! And…a man could almost afford to shoot that gun recreationally. Of course, someone has to start selling them first.

A special Air tank is needed to make that change. I have on that came in 22 and I put in a 177. And it went super sonic every time. So if you don’t care about the crack at any power level. The 25 and 22 tank valve do not close fast enough to make the power wheel effective in this case.

quote Ray384:

Since I do my shooting at a range, noise is not an issue. The .177 that I have is 18″. I sort of wonder if the 24″ would add much in velocity.

Also I live in Illinois, which brings up other problems. I have a FOID card, but would have to figure out the purchase rules for a barrel.

:hoot:

Velocity gain in a longer barrel is true of air guns and black powder rifles. The question is how much?

At one time it was a fairly standard belief that you went up about 50 fps per added inch of barrel. (Let’s base this on an OEM Talon SS 12″ barrel)

Today, that belief is the number lies somewhere between 25 to 50 fps per inch of barrel. Depends on what pellet, what barrel, what valve, what tophat, what hammer weight, etc. etc….the only certainty is that your velocity will increase with each inch of barrel added…up to a point, and I’m not certain of where that particular point of diminishing return is. I know the .257 caliber distance shooters use some pretty long barrels, but there is an upper limit. I just don’t know what it is.

I have the talon ss frame with the 18″ barrel out of my condor ss in it. Mine is bone stock, nothing done to it. I love it, shoots great, very loud. I’m still running the talon valve. I have it shooting 37gr rat snipers at @800 fps. I just use it for a 50yrd pig gun.

Since I do my shooting at a range, noise is not an issue. The .177 that I have is 18″. I sort of wonder if the 24″ would add much in velocity.

Also I live in Illinois, which brings up other problems. I have a FOID card, but would have to figure out the purchase rules for a barrel.

If you have a Talon it comes with an 18 inch barrel.
You can easily replace with a 24 inch. As with the 18″ you will have no sound suppression.
But that is an easy fix.
