Long range shots with .177 cal?

If i recall correctly, my power setting was at minimum or at least under 1 to maybe 1-1/2…..
This was when I just acquired my first Condor. My first foray into PCP air rifles.
I didnt have a chrony or much other gear.
I would just fill to the maximum pressure or everything that my DIN valved scuba tank would give it.
My local dive shop would do a great job of doing a slow, cool dry fill and would get that tank right on up to 3400 psi at a cool room temperature, just under 70degrees faranheit.
Back then I would always keep the rifle topped off at the max that the scuba tank would give it, every ten shots or so.
I often found myself fighting to keep my shots from going supersonic, even with the standard flow .177 valve.
At that time I hadnt learned enough about how supersonic speed would degraded accuracy. I was just trying to fight the noise that the sonic crack would produce!!!
Kinda dumb luck at first as I figured out what worked and what didnt work….
It wasnt until I got more familiar with the technicalities and science of tuning my air rifles did I start having anything less than stellar performance…. :rofl:
That Is why my biggest reccomendation to anyone starting out is to go and just shoot the heck out of their new air rifle. Get familiar with it and just go and have fun before getting too concerned or worried about the performance.
For the most part, almost all the popular brands of airguns will work just fine outta the box intially and wont really require much intial setup or tuning for the most basics of shooting.
Better to spend a bunch of time getting familiar with the gun. Get it figured out with what it does and doesnt do and know where the improvement is needed……Ya know what I mean?????
What doesnt work for you and figure out how to improve it.
Too many people will take on tuning and upgrading , modifiying and chasing their tails in circles just because they like to tinker… That,,, and they see everyone else is doing it too!!!
Problem is they really havent learned yet to discern the qualities and the shortcommings that they are supposedly improving upon. Yeaheveryone wants more accuracy and more power,,, duh?
There is no solution if you dont know the problem.
No other air rifle is more inviting to tinker and modify than these Airforce modular style of guns.
Really the company has spent great amount in research and development.
As an inexperienced newbie, how can you know what is best if you arent familiar with the basic design. You cant say you are more familiar with the inherent qualities and shortcommings than the factory?
That is why I say, spend your intial time shooting your gun and the money towards lead to send downrange….

That target was shot during my first week of owning this gun without mods or worrying about tuning or adjusting.

The only thing I do recall is that I needed help with the scope.
This target was shot right after I vistited with Tim at Mac 1 Airguns and he sold me on his drooper scope rings. This was so that I could optically zero the recticles on my inexpensive BSA scope. These were the first targets fired right after I had finished installing those rings!
Only three sighters to dial it in …… A few clicks left and a few more up and viola!!!
The gun pretty much shot itself after that!
It still impresses me that I can get a .177 to actually reach and punch the paper out to a hundred yards. I might not get the groups like i have here at 60 or 70 but it will at least all my shots will be peppered within the scoring rings of a smallbore target.
At the distance that this target is shot at, the performance is equal to the high end Kimber .22 RF target rifle I used to shoot regularly. :8:

Longrange accuracy of stock .177 Condor with a std flow .177 tank/valve/tophat and regular everyday plain jane Crossman Premier pellets purchased at Kmart retail department store.

This was my first shooting experience with PCP air rifle and I was Amazed!
I found that as I shoot beyond 75 yrds the groups open up pretty quickly with more flyers . I shoot the .177 with very low to zero powerwheel setting. Just tuned to keep from experiencing a sonic crack .
Even at a hundred yards i could hit scoring shots onto the paper with even a few hitting the bullseye . Of course many flyers. However for plinking and small pest control 100 yrds is possible. For shooting consistient groups I would say 70 yrds ……

Shot from my dining room table and out the back door the full length of my backyard is about 212′ . This was my first experience with PCP air rifle and was very impressed with the lowly .177 pill.

You can shoot .177 to a 100, but you need a windless day. Just after the sun rises is the best time!

Forget it. It would be a waste of time. With .177 you will be doing great to have any kind of accuracy at 50 yards, much less 150 yards. Even with the heaviest .177, the mass is way too light for “long” ranges. To top it off, the 16 grain Eunjins are some of the worst quality pellets I have seen in my life.

I had a highly overpowered Talon SS with a 25 inch .177 Weihrauch barrel. It would pitch Eunjins downrange at over 1100 FPS, but the target looked like a shotgun pattern. I managed to slow them down to around 800 FPS and shoot a 1 inch group at 25 yards.

If you want to shoot “long range”, you will need to think about going to a bigger caliber like .25. You need mass.
