Distance Increased To 800 yds=.257
Hi All,
First let me say the POI shifts i initially experienced, then did some modifications and was a lot better, but now as distances increase, vertical inconsistencies are getting worse.. This initial experiment was to just see how far a .257 COULD go and if anything can be hit?…..I have taken it all the way and achieved that goal……I will post this video and have 2 others in coming weeks……During the wet months and no dust to see misses will rebuild gun to STRENGTHEN and STABILIZE the WEAK FRAME and STOCK FIT COMBO, I hope. Then do same thing again for better accuracy….The Potential is there.
I have shot at 800 yds about 5 different times/days. The RAM was nose to butt 36″ long and was fine, but belly to back was only 13″ and vertical dispersion of the rifle made it hard to hit…..I grabbed a steel remnant of 10 gauge plate, painted white and got hits, it is 39″ wide, and can carry in car. BUT, if i didn’t see dirt fly I figured hitting the plate and was, but didn’t know WHERE on the plate… High Power Competition after each shot it is marked and see WHERE the hit was to correct….AND THERE TARGET FRAME IS 72″ SQUARE!!
For better view i tilt camera in Portrait Mode and fill screen with plate. I CAN rotate 90* but in YouTube it is so skinny barely see hits…So Imagine I am Shooting and Plate is 90* clockwise…Anyway a friend was at butts/pits of range and called where i hit and as evidenced first shot at 3 o’clock and corrected over near center ……..
It is getting very difficult, but my .257 fired at 204 fpe, has enough energy to flatten totally bullets of 92 grain FB..800 yds still retains 135 fpe….

That close in focus at nearer targets is a minor nuisance I am experiencing with the large but rather inexpensive VISM scope that I currently shoot on my .257
Not that I shoot under 20-25 yrds very often, it just annoys me that it wont dial down that far. Otherwise, my stupid NC Star VISM EVO scope works really well, with tons of elevation clicks that consistient repeatable point of impact vs clicks turned. Even with elevation maxed at end of travel the windage stays put with no major horizontal changes to the holes in the target. It tracks good. Full mag isnt the best high tack sharp image but plenty sharp enough to see where my shots hit the paper.
Anyways I have drooper style mounts with about four degrees.
What types of rings mount ard you using on yours carl?
With your scope so radically canted, where does your scope optically center or zero at? Are you using mildot recticle or something radically different? Is it a first focal plane scope?

I use this scope http://www.hawkeoptics.com/sidewinder-8-32×56-20x-mil-dot.html read all the wanted info and see the reticle. DOTS from top to bottom……I also use a HAWKE mounting RAIL that has adjustment screw to make rear tilt up and pivots on the front. The tilt makes no difference to me…..Further i go back, more MOA i need for given distance and bullet weight and speed. Keep adjusting scope lower which requires bring MUZZLE UP and results in the weird angles i show but is no problem. I do NOT SEE END OF BARREL and just place what mil dot is giving me the elevation i need………This 800 yd shooting required 137 MOA. A scope isn’t near enough and have to get it with the SCOPE MOUNT RAIL.
