Q:

power wheels again but with searching first

this was also posted on GTA in PCP>>> looking for answers across the board. I have read at seveal sites on this issue so I not just wimping out on you

I have a new Talon SS and plan to get a airtanksforsale bottle next week, been shooting off of the gun tank up till now. This gun is box stock and i am shooting chp -domed 14.3 gr about 850 at any power wheel setting right out of the box (3000 to 2700 psi)

Like others my power wheel (pw) did not do a thing so i read a lot here and on the GTA site. suggestions were:

adjust the top hat closer to the tank (.070in) at pw=2 and monitor with the chrony for an acceptable low speed (600fps for me) with small adjustments and then it will give you controll >>>>>> not so much

put on an oring behind the top hat and you will have control with the pw>>>> not so much

eventually i combined both : put on 1/16 thick o-ring and adjusted top hat (th) to just touch the o-ring>>> this gives me about 120 fps control of speed going from pw12 to pw2

called Air Force and they put me thru a Q and A session with the outcome of >>> the 59 gram hammer may be too heavy so they are sending me a 54 gram hammer ( ok according to them to mod gunas long as you don’t mess with the trigger without warranty issure). If this doesn’t work to give me 600 to 800 fps control they plan to swap out the air tank ( citing a faulty tank valve)

questions:
is a 600 to 800 fps control realistic with this gun system working correctly using the above pellet

in the non-functioning of the pw an expected issue with currently produced guns

is there a better fix than what i have done already ( oring and top hat adjustment)

is AF’s suggestion on the lighter hammer logical and potentially productive

Why we’re not the one having problems lol.

Oh boy … here we go.
Well I am done, and I am fleeing this thread as fast as I can …

I had a reply on gta that recommended that the length of the hammer spring should be adjusted to 3.5 inches and another guy cut his and posted pw setting and fps …..

I find the o-ring concept very contrived and the top hat gap + the spring power to be a more’ engineering’ type solution.

I have read many threads on this and there are o-ring methods, one piece top hat methods, your approach, and just shoot it guys.
Many guys suggest 2700 to 2400 psi as the best pressure zone ( can be gun specific) so when I get my tank I will have the oppoetunit to try the shot count/ gun setting curve.

Well, all those are different tunes. You have an adjustable top-hat, you need to do it one way. If you have a TT tophat you tune it for that.
There are no absolutes settings. You need to stop freaking out about what pressure and what size and what velocity. Get a Chrony, a bench, a few hour off work and start shooting and measuring. Tune, shoot repeat until you are happy 🙂

All my tophat tuning start with setting the tophat using the thickness of a US Quarter. There you go. After that, I keep the tune that shoots best for the application of that gun.
I never measured the same tophat distance from any of my talons as they are all different and all set for a different purpose.

Good luck and have fun. Tuning is never over 🙂

miksatx>> don’t understand what is about right?

I was commenting that 600-800 pw adjustment sounded about right. I shoot a .25 never had a problem with the power wheel.
I don’t use a o ring behind my top hat and I set the top hat at a 1/10″ off the brass to the bottom of the top hat.

The power wheel adjusts the spring tension, but if the toip-hat is too way back that won’t matter cause the valve would open shortly and partially.
Bring the top-hat a little at a time forward and start measuring velocities until you can shoot a nice “bell” fps string

thanks for the reply and I am starting to get that. Other threads here oand on gta have suggested a starting point of 0.07 in of space between the valve head and the back of the top hat. Then adjustments are made in about 1/8 turn increments both out ( away from the valve) and in. I think that this is what you are suggesting and not to use an o-ring. Have i got it right; I have read many threads on this and there are o-ring methods, one piece top hat methods, your approach, and just shoot it guys.

Hi,

the key is the top-hat position. you need to learn to tune your rifle (many threads and info about it here)
The power wheel adjusts the spring tension, but if the toip-hat is too way back that won’t matter cause the valve would open shortly and partially.
Bring the top-hat a little at a time forward and start measuring velocities until you can shoot a nice “bell” fps string.
The power wheel is for making finer adjustments on that curve, not really to make a huge difference in velocity, though it can be used for that too in a broader meaning.

At the end, you want to tune for a specific average fps, so why care what the wheel range gives you.

Make sure the hammer has some lubrication. Friction opposes spring tension. If your hammer does not travel well, wheel settings are less evident.

Just be patient and learn about tuning. Also, every rifle is different so my top-hat position might not work on yours.

Welcome to the hobby

Sounds about right, that’s about max for a stock talon. If you want it hotter you can go to a condor valve and stem.
