Q:

New Hammer = no cocking

Hello-

New to forum, and Airforce platform, for that matter.

Set up is stock Condor with older wire safety. Installed a heavier hammer (95g) and now it wont cock. So far as I can tell, everything is in place, but seems to have more resistance when reinstalling the plate covering the trigger/safety mechanism and then the trigger guard. As Ive read and all seem to agree, that safety mechanism is less than desired and has a high friction to begin with, not having a dedicated slide between covering plate and trigger guard. It was always a bit tight. When retracting the breech, it does not engage, however I determined that if I lossen the screw that holds the plate covering safety and trigger guard, I can get the safety to move, as that seemed to be the reason the safety would not move. The I realized if I reset the safety to on (no fire), requiring pliers, I can in fact cock the gun. It takes great effort to push safety to firing position, but I can and then it fires.

Using a pliers to engage safety and be able to cock the rifle, and the amount of force required to disengage in order to fire is not conducive to a good shooting experience 🙂 Is it the hammer? Not sure why that would make it more difficult to move the safety, or did I reassemble something wrong? Ive read some of these issues occur after modding, such as heavier hammer and that the safety can be an issue but not sure if simply removing the safety will remedy the situation. Hopefully this situation sounds familiar to someone and there is a solution. Input appreciated! Thanks!

Happy Holidays! Chris

Sorry, no not talon tunes but this is a common occurrence regardless. My Texan arrives tomorrow, so I am interested to see how they differ 🙂

Chris – Ah, OK, that explains alot and maybe more promising for a TT part. Sorry I misunderstood. Keep the group posted.

Good luck,

I have an older rifle, the wire safety version so no longer under warranty. I did not buy a talon tunes hammer, did not know much about them until recently 🙂 From what I understand, they are excellent and I am sure they will answer your questions even before your purchase. It is also my understanding they will install anything, for whatever timed service fee.

Chris – Have you received adequate technical support from Talon Tunes?
And do you know if the modification affects your rifle warranty from AirForce?

From what I have read, this is a common occurrence just from opening the action. With that said, maybe I did something wrong but the first time I open up an action on a rifle, I take pics and everything matched up as far as configuration. Maybe it is the size of the hammer? However, everything seem to elevated somewhat, making it more difficult to put the trigger/safety plate back on. I take one of allen keys or wrench to hook around the safety and pull it back. Its more difficult than before to disengage the safety after cocking, but still doable with my thumb. Beyond that, the shooting/air performance is as expected, better!

P.S. I will post an update when I take it down and redo, see if anything changes.

Chris,

Thanks for the quick response. Did you encounter problems with the initial install or know what you did differently that caused the problems? Just trying to get a sense of risk for a change to TT hammer. My overall goal is quieter operation without sacrifice in reliability or accuracy.

Thanks again,
Bob

I can cock it, but have to use something to reset the safety. Been searching on ways to remove safety, as people have implied but no luck yet. Also ran out of ammo, but will try again this weekend from scratch and see why it became so difficult to put the trigger/safety plate back on, which of course in those wire safety mechanisms doesnt help by adding friction. What an unusual and frankly un-mechanistic approach in development???

Chris

Thinking of TT Hammer and wondering – Did you resolve your install/use problems?

Thanks,
Bob

There was no preload, ie power wheel is at zero. Shot a few today (60deg in NH today!) and several times I could cock it without engaging safety, odd. Im going to plan on removing it, still looking for plans to do so, if anyone has an idea.

Prouzy, i always decock mine also, it cant go off if its not cocked. Glad you threw this thread up i am learning something new also.

Doug will hit you up after the holidays and i have time to tinker some more. Gunna be tied up with the family for about a week. Itching to mess with it and get the hammer weight out to see what happens. Tank dump was the main reason i was running washers under the top hat. It stopped it from happening by limiting tophat travel. Will see what happens with no weight just the hammer then pull the tophat shim to see what happens.

Learn something new everyday thats why i love this place. Thanks gents.

Thanks guys! I thought hammer length too, will check that. I left power wheel at zero, which the little screw broke and did not think I could increase anyway. In fact, on the first shot, tank dumped with 3000psi. But if it was hammer length, I would think safety on/off should not matter so much, but the only difference seems to be, I have to manually put safety on first, then I can cock the gun. Will recheck position of safety, maybeits opposite and I did not realize.

I never trusted/liked the safety. I decock if I dont fire. Is there a mod to perform, as I assume there is more to it than removing. Ive read folks doing it, but have not found the actual process outlined. Any idea how?

Thanks, Chris

You have 95 gram hammer and the weight? That would be the problem right there.

One thing is the 4″ hammer springs are to long in the first place. When you run the spacer it’s on the end of the hammer and making less space.

Unless you have a larger valve there is no need for more then a 95
gram hammer.

I haven’t messed with stock size valve in a long time. Your tank dump is probably coming from to much pressure on the valve when not cocked. I set mine up so it has minimal preload when not cocked.

If you want pm number and time to talk

Dang makes me wonder what i got wrong now? I slapped the 95 gr hamme in and had to turn the power wheel down then cranked it up after i cocked it. That was my first tank dump.

I have the power wheel assembly, spring, hammer weight, hammer then breech. Do i have them out of order?

Interesting.

Should be able to use all your pw with 95 gram hammer. My hammers can be up to 130 grams and go to at least 10.

If it was me I would remove the safety. The old safeties are not safe at all. Them make sure you have the springs in the right spots.

2 things i can think of and may be 2 seperate issues.

On the no cocking back your powerwheel all the way down. The new 95 gr hammer is longer than the stock one. Mine will not cock with the 95 gr hammer if the power wheel is over 4-5 i think. Past that the hammer spring is full compressed and the hammer cannot move far enough to catch and cock the gun.

For the safty. There are 4 springs in there 3 verticle and 1 parallel. The parallel one contacts the safty lever and may be out of place. I actually bent mine when installing my wokgard and now the safty is too stiff to move by hand. Never tried pliers on it. The gun worked besides the safty which i never was crazy about anyway so not a big deal in my book.

Hopefully that helps. Keep us posted if you figure it out.
