Q:

Modifying calipers for top hat measuring.

Hey Guy’s ,

A little slow and careful work with a Dremal cutting down the inside measuring probes {back side} and you can get direct measurements with your calipers for top hat tuning.

Once I figure out how to post a picture I’ll show you.

I’ll double check with feeler gauges and playing cards.

Yep! This one is Cable Damascus blade and guard. Made with cable containing three different carbon contents. I make it back in the 1989-1990 time frame. The grip is Indian Sambar Stag. The good Old stuff! She went to war in Desert Storm. Along with this one. tha Persian I

Mike, It’s more fun to tinker than it is to “just ” clean. Like you “upside-down” blade.

A template of sorts is fine, but if you have a set of feeler gauges i see no reason not to use them, saves time in making a template. Once the tophat is set where you want it, add blue thread locker to the screws and leave it be. The problem is no two tank, valve combinations are the same few of us set the tophats to the same exact gap. .071 seems to be a good starting point, but my (TSS valve) ended up at .067 another i did for a friend ended up at .058. THis is setting up for consistency so i could get as many shots as close together in FPS. Others set up for more power right from the first shot and end up with a bigger spread, but shooting 20-30fps faster. yet some go in the opposite direction and add shims to the tophat.

Knifemaker,

Nothing as long as your feeler gauges are clean, no dirt ,oil, lent, or any other material that might add a couple thou or so.

Didn’t ruin anything, took material off where it’s not used for measuring function. Look at the probes used to measure interior dimensions. Closed they look like an broad head with two parts separated by a center line. When they open to measure, the center lines cross and expand with the measuring surfaces to the outside in position to measure inside dimensions. By make these probes narrower by grinding outside of the broad head[looking at it at zero] you can create a more usable tool. Just be careful not to touch the interior center surfaces while getting rid of excess metal from the exterior sides. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Why did you ruin a good caliper for? All you had to do is take your tophat off and measure the lip of the tophat. Then just measure from the lip to the tank. Without grinding anything.
