Best value for money rangefinders
Hi guys, anyone know of a cheap rangefinder that gets the work done? Anyone tested the Hawke rangefinders? I often hear that more expensive rangefinders are just rebranded china ones. same goes for scopes but does anyone know where to get the china version, aka a good rangefinder for a cheap price that costs considerately less than the exact same one with a different name on it?

Ever since I lost my Leica on a bow hunt I never went back to the pricy best.
I bought this cheapo one about 3 years ago and I’m pleased for the money I’d say it’s worth it.
Jim Chapman from American Airgunner hunter uses a Halo also, but he doesn’t endorse it and not sure which model he has/uses.

How is the Hawke working? Good?
These are the feature that the rangefinder MUST HAVE
+ Angle competition
+ Measure accurately to at least 200-250 meters
That is about it, my plan was to place beer cans out in a field at different distances and then try to range them with my scope. After that I will range them with the rangefinder and see how accurate I was.
Also for paper punching of course, say goodbye to tape measure, and hunting crows in trees.
I agree with brother Hemn Leica is synonym of first class optics and I believe in rangefinder too. But is too expansive for me. I bought Hawke LRF 600 http://www.hawkeoptics.co.uk/laser-range-finder-pro-600.html
My Brother Brian, believe me, you never will be regret if you buy Leica 1600-B, this is really a MASTERof the range finders, i tried small sparrows up to 160 meters and my Leica 1600-B have read the ranges, for the size of doves and + it is really very easy to read at 160 or 200 or + mtrs ,,, i will try sparrows for farther distances and will report here,,,
what made me to buy this one is , this Leica has a very wide Field of View, and has a 7X mag also and 24 OLD, the glass has top of clarity, even i don’t clean it usually but still shows very nice,,, very small and handy, very accurate and great stuff, this is one of my best stuffs i own,
i do agree with some one who say that Air rifle dose not need such high RF, this is totally true and it is over the value for Air Rifles, but if you able to buy it, it will be enough for your life time of hunting, and your mind will take rest at least from this side, you will not think of buying better ones,,,because better RF that can hit Lieca 1600-B is the one that is able to read up to 2000 mtrs the military RFs, ( i cannot find it now, i forgot the brand name) they are about $2,000 , so, i think at least my mind is reset in this part ,,,,
but still there are soooo many choices if you buy the cheap RFs,
But for Air gunners, I don’t see the use of one to measure more than 200 Yards

Nikon Aculon 8397 works for me. $140 or so. Forgot to add that they are small, light and very accurate.
Here’s the thing about rangefinders, they all have the EXACT same laser. The US government forbids the use of a more powerful range finder. What you pay for is tighter convergence and better glass. The sensor that times the laser is a little better as well. So there is no sense in spending $200-350 for a rangefinder that will work the same as a $99 dollar one. All rangefinders lie about how far they work. To get a really good rangefinder you need to jump up to the 700 dollar plus range like Hemn’s Leica. I like the Leica 1600. To range something really small or far you have to put the rangefinder on a tripod, just like shooting long range the rangefinder has to be held perfectly still on the target.

Thanks for that tip, after some google:ing that one fits the bill pretty well, very interested in buying it now. I found it pretty cheap here so maybe I will go for that one, we will see

I have Hawke LRF 400. Clear optics, simple and user friendly. But, don’t have Hawke scope to compare 🙂

I have a Leica 1000R rangefinder. I have dropped it on hard gravel many times and bashed it on trees. Still works like a charm. The nice part is it automatically calculates the horizontal (X) distance when rangeing a bird high in a tree or on a building. This is very usefull to me
however i didn’t have the Hawke RF, but if they work like Hawke scopes ,,,then they are not bad,,,

I think Hemn is referring to the Vectronix rangefinder with 3,000m capabilities. I don’t recall any compact consumer rangefinder that goes beyond 2,000m besides the Vectronix.
KS – I’m surprise you don’t already own a Leica 1600-B. Pawn off some of the other crap you got and buy one. It’s the cream of the crop as far as compact range finders out there. You can range structure out to 1 mile (1,760 yards) in case you get bored and want to see how far your pellets can actually travel.
