What causes groups like these?
Every now and then I get groups like this, it is 6 shots at 50m 4 of wich are all touching and 2 of wich are touching 3/4″ above the rest. Why does that happen? Is it because of my shitty bipod/uneaven-forestground rest in the prone poition? If I used a table with sandbags allowing the gun to recoil backwards instead of the front of the gun going upwards in recoil would that solve it?

I been having this problem with my Impact but worse.
I was not sure if it was me or the gun. I tried to take the as much human error out of it using a lead-sled and strapped down the rifle without interfering with the barrel in anyway. I still had random irregular fliers then had out of the blue would get hole in hole group then every where. Very frustrating….
My SD 3.5 in 80 shot string so its not the fluctuation in FPS
Yes, those are nice groups Hemn !

guys,,,
the damn flyer shots will be there from time to time,,, when i got my 1st Edgun Long .22cal…. i had a good place for shooting and target practice right from my house … but now i have to go for somewhere for target practice,,, anyhow,,, i still have some good groups that i tried them with my Long .22cal… the below one is my best groups that i got them at 65 mtrs … but i have a flyer in one of them,,, all 5 shots /group
65 mtrs
65 mtrs ,, look at the damn flyer one that spoiled the best 5 shot group
if you look at this one…i took 5 shots at 80 mtrs … 4 when into the same hole and one fucked the group … the two above shots at left side,,were not taken for this group,,,, if i m not mistaken my father-in-low took those two shoots..

this one also 80 mtrs ….
i don’t remember this one was 50 mtrs or 65 mtrs
but this one 50 mtrs
all groups took in 2014 .. i don’t remember all things about them well,,, if there is any mistake then im sorry … i have posted them all in my thread about my Edgun at the time..
I’d just use/play around with the stainless steal ones if I where u.
Don’t turn the HST to much at a time just 1/4 turn and take 3 shots and turn 1/4th test again.
Hum, my Cricket 22 std does 880 fps with JSB 18g an ES of about 6.5 fps and SD of 1.4 fps this is right after I rebuilt the reg.
Filled to 210 bar down to 130 bar it’s getting 56 = 4 mag shots.

Greg, what would you consider a “consistant” gun in terms of spread? I am playing around with your springs and not really all to pleased with the result as of yet. I am going to continue testing right now and see what I can get
Also, if you can while target shooting crony at the same time and watch the velocity if it changes with the shift. 😉

If you’re shooting off of a rear bag that could be a problem also if you’re fighting with it.

Exactly, thanks for all the replies, I was thinking along the lines of Spinj, I recently saw a video on youtube about shooting with bipods. His POI changed when he went from a shooting rest to a bipod and he also talked about the gun having to recoil backwards, must test my gun for POI shift throughout a shot string and see what happens. Fliers should not group well and this has happened before in 5 shot groups when 3 pellets stack and 2 stack at a different POI
hum, yea but fliers don’t usually group up consistently like that they’re more randomly located ?

The sun, moon and planets aligned just right at the moment you pulled the trigger causing a gravitation flux pulling your pellets up and away from the intended location.
Actually, with all the variables with pellets, wind, heat, pressure, gun, hold, heartbeat, trigger control, breathing, flyers are going to happen.
Strange if u ask me …………
Could be a number of things ….. .
if it does a 2 group shooting like that I’d suspect that it’s a mechanical problem.
Like things to check would be the common ones first like everything related to your scope, all points of affixing rail base rings and the scope inner tube erectors.
Loose moderator/LDC, frame/barrel bolts can all come ajar overtime.
hum and because it’s a vertical POI shift ……. and
if u been noticing it been happing in the beginning or near the ending of a shot fill I’d suspect u might want to try a barrel pull of .5 mm.
But make sure u top off to 160-180 bar before torqueing the frame Hex nuts.

The reason you are getting groups like that every now and then is because right before the gun shot the pellets into a different group it recoiled in a different though still consistent direction. It is very likely that the surface contour in which the rifle’s forend or butt (or both) on which they rest on has changed, thus changing the direction of recoil. Or it could also be a change in the manner of how the gun is held has changed. One way of checking this is to shoot the gun at an 80-degree angle towards the sky (make sure you know where the pellet will land) with the light behind the pellet. If the pellet’s flight is stable and straight, then the recoil pattern is straight back. If the pellet all of a sudden corkscrews or flies off to the side then the pellet has either clipped the baffles or because of even a slight movement instead of straight back the turbulence within the shroud has altered the pellet’s flight (because the exiting air is no longer directly behind the pellet but non-concentric to the axis of the pellet). Perhaps you may have noticed at some point that the reticle didn’t seem to move when the shot broke and the gun just seemed dead upon firing. That right there is an indication of perfect recoil management – the gun only moved straight back.
What would solve it? Not shooting pellets. Even going crazy and sorting every single pellet for skirt size, damage, head size and weight you will still get a flyer every once in awhile. It is a demon you just have to live with. The shape of a pellet makes it an inferior projectile. The pellet in general is not balanced. Given this fact I am still amazed that the modern pellet gun will stack lead at 50 yards.

Hello Ron,
I don’t own an Impact but u can try and place a piece of rubber between the CF bottle and shroud to check if it’s the barrel affixing that’s the cause.
Don’t make it to tight, just snug ………… barrel harmonic on some guns can be a/the bitch !
