Q:

New Mutant

I have been following this part of the TT sandbox for some time and finally joined the Mutantneer club…just picked up a standard with black stock along with a SWFA SS 16x Mil-quad. I am a current Edgun owner and know the drill but I was not prepared for how impressive the little Mutant is. Trigger, trigger, and more trigger!! Du-amn! :8: Cocking and magazine indexing is excellent! Sublime even. Now I see what all the fuss is about.

Quick question…do you Mutantneers know what type of Aluminum is used for the pressure tube? I know Ed uses Russian Duraluminum.

Definitely going to enjoy this one!

DT

Uncle, probably you are referring to something like Fn Herstal Defender or Arrows…

But that actually is not new generation 😛

Unfortunately I think the available .50 cal is not backyard friendly …

Concerning Bluetooth and Smartphones you are absolutely right, I was puzzled to learn that I have to command my toothbrush via an app.

Good thing though is that I can have an alert from the dentist if my kids are not brushing their teeth properly :8:

Bad thing was when I learnt that our washing machine was “cheating on us” when buying the detergent on Am@zon, she was buying a fragrance we don’t like… :angrymob:

(But she’s a bitch, she’s always talking with the support and probably has an affair with the technician because she called him several times when we were absent and never told us…)

:hoot:

Guys…

I’m holding out for the new generation of pcp bullpups. They are going to utilize a “Bluetooth” method of controlling pressure release. It will work in conjunction with your “Smart Phones” and allow you to dial the pressure up/down, as well as control shot count, programed trajectory drop, and moving point of impact up/down, left/right. Gen 2 will also control automatic atmospheric air refills!

I’m taking my morning meds now…my vision is starting to “shimmer” and that’s never a good sign.

Kindly ‘Ol Uncle Hoot:

Thanks guys. That is what I suspected. Performance seems steady in that 200 to 220 range.

Dman, thank’s for the info.

Tube seems pretty beefy if ID is 27mm and OD is 34mm. According to ASM specs 2024 T4 has a yield of 47Kpsi. Pipe working pressure with a 3x safety factor (with a wall that thick) is 6400psi or 441 bar. Max would be pushing 19Kpsi. Threaded tube ends certainly lowers this but still impressive.

Sound about right?

DT

Dan, in this thread, http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=22808&start=60, pay attention to the pressure drop in the pictures that shows the slope is not linear. The pressure drop for the shot is much higher at the higher tube pressure, indicating the waste of air. That was done in the Edgun R3. I noticed that the Mutant has a more linear pressure drop but this phenomenon is still there just less obvious. I only fill my gun up to ~220 bars.

Tube ID 1.0645

I believe all those having had pcps with air cylinders that can be filled above 220 bar have noticed that above 250 bar the “energy utilization” is not quite as efficient as below said pressure.

I think this comes from the fact that the range of energy to be handled with the current “fixed range of energy” tools (regulator, valves, etc) is simply too broad (probably a regulator designed to handle 250 to 300 bar pressure only would do much better than a regulator “capable” to handles pressures from 110 to 300 bars).

Probably in order to handle energy properly at higher pressures we would need “variable devices”, able to change their settings according to the power range.

Solving this equation with a mechanical approach only will be very difficult (if not impossible) and probably in order to explore higher ranges of energy efficiently we will need new technologies and new projects.

For examples nowadays car engines need electronics to handle power properly.

Probably also the approach (regulator, valves, ports, volume, etc) to handle pressure will need to change and in this context it is very interesting to see the developements of some companies like Dayst@te, Huben, etc.

:2cents:

(This said, apparently the Mutant has an outstanding “power/pressure managment system”.

:hoot:

Dan, for what it’s worth…I’ve filled my Mutant to 250 bar but have a feeling the shot count does not increase any credible number over a 200 bar fill.

In other high pressure pcp airguns, it has been noted filling to top rated capacity has not increased the shot count as anticipated. It seems the regulator does not function as effectively as it does at 200 bar. This has been noted in some other airguns and I wonder if anyone has experienced this in their Mutants?

Hoot:

For you guys that have had your Taipan apart…. do you know what the air tube wall thickness is? Trying to gauge the strength as it states 250bar max fill pressure on the block. I’ve filled to 250 but normally stick to around 220.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the info Dman! Glad the barrel is good to go.

Thanks guys. A real gem of a PCP rifle.

Another quick question…my barrel has three dimples towards the breach end and I was told it was recent production CZ..is that correct? Accuracy so far is outstanding.

Thanks

DT

I do believe the air tubes are made from 2024 AL.

I will double check.

As far as the 3 dimples.

There is no “Recent production” so to speak …. yeh sure they recently produced the barrel.

The barrel is the same that they have always used on the mutant std.

The reason for the 3 dots is because the barrels are originally produced for the cz200 /AAs200.

They use the 3 dimples for sight mounting and such.

CZ doesn’t make a barrel for tamaun. And from.what I’m told CZ does produce for companies outside the Czech Republi.

So they buy the cz200 barrels (which are very accurate) in bulk
And machine them to fit.

Dear Hoot,

Do you know what grade/specification of black aluminum the pressure tube is made from?

:hoot:

No problem Dan…according to my Chinese calipers it is right at 34mm’s!

Kind regards,

Uncle Hoot:

Aw, I think I will call it Hootaluminum grade 34 black.

Dan,

Welcome to be a mutantneer.

Did you mention edgun?
Hmmm, I now remembered I have 2…I need to bring them out for a fresh air…LOL.

Enjoy the Mutant…
